George O'Malley (T.R. Knight) is a fellow intern of Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). They live together in Meredith's house. He harbors a secret crush for Meredith and eventually has a one night affair with her. Later he is forced to move away from her house and he lives with Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) until the end of the second season. In one situation, he saves the life a patient with whom he is caught in the elevator during a power failure. He is a sensitive person which leads to clashes with his colleagues in the high pressure environment of the surgical program. Everyone considers his decisions to be emotional and not objective. Among the other interns, he's often viewed as the one who's too nice and too sensitive to get the job done. He begins with a lack of confidence in his abilities, which makes it difficult for him to take the firm steps to create personal and professional opportunities that his peers do. Over the course of the season he comes to realize that he needs to be more assertive in order to get what he wants. He also has problems relating to his family, because they aren't intellectuals and don't understand him.
"You don't get to choose. I know you've been going through a bad time. I know you miss Shepard. And I know that your life has, admittedly, been pretty unpleasant these days. You get points for breathing in and out. You get to be a little selfish. But you don't get to choose a dog over me... I'm George. I sleep down the hall from you. I buy your tampons. "
