Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) is a mentally troubled but brilliant trauma surgeon at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. He arrives at the hospital after leaving the U.S. Army, where he served in Iraq. His main romantic involvement has been with surgical resident Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). He also had romantic feelings for his best friend, cardiothoracic surgeon Teddy Altman (Kim Raver).
Owen first appears on "Grey's Anatomy" in the Season 5 premiere, when he and Cristina share an immediate attraction. Although they kiss, Owen must return to the military. A few months later, after the deaths of everyone else in his platoon, Owen comes back to Seattle Grace as the head of the trauma department. His military experience has a marked effect upon him as he now behaves brusquely and distantly.
Despite his harsh manner, Cristina remains attracted to Owen and the two become involved. Their romance abruptly ends after Owen, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, attempts to strangle Cristina in his sleep. Horrified by his behavior, he goes to therapy and eventually reaches the point where he and Cristina can resume their relationship.
Owen arranges for his military friend, Dr. Teddy Altman, to join the staff of Seattle Grace and serve as a mentor to Cristina. This situation becomes complicated when Teddy and Owen realize they have feelings for each other. In the Season 6 finale, Owen chooses Cristina when he rushes into the hospital to help save her from a deranged gunman.
