Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is an attending general surgeon at Seattle Grace Hospital on the television show "Grey's Anatomy." A graduate of Wellesley College, at the start of the show Miranda was working as resident-in-charge of the five new surgical residents; Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). Her nickname from her residents was "The Nazi" because she was blunt and tough towards them.
Miranda married her husband, Tucker Jones (Cress Williams) in 1995, and gave birth to a son, William George Bailey Jones, during a bomb scare in the hospital. At the same time, Tucker was in surgery with Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) after crashing his car on the way to the hospital. She was helped through labor by George O'Malley and named her baby after him as thanks, although his dad calls him "Tuck". Unfortunately, her difficulties in juggling a career as a surgeon with being a mother lead to the break-down of her marriage and she decides to divorce Tucker after he issued an ultimatum to prevent her taking a Pediatrics Surgery fellowship.
After the birth of her baby, Miranda returned to work but her confidence in her abilities was shaken after an accident in surgery when Izzie Stevens cut the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) wire connected to Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in surgery and he then died after his heart transplant. Miranda was criticized by colleagues in the following morbidity and mortality conference and became disillusioned by how little she could help people with her work as a surgeon. After that Miranda decided to open a free clinic at Seattle Grace, and after initial difficulty in getting assistance from the attendings, eventually won their support. The Denny Duquette Memorial clinic later opened, paid for in part by hs bequest to Izzie Stevens.
After this, Miranda competed for the post of Chief Resident with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), but lost. She then spent some time as the deputy to Callie, picking up the slack and being very good at delegation before it was noticed that she was covering for Callie and Callie was terminated from the position and Miranda was promoted. After separating from her husband, Miranda realized that she could no longer continue the surgical career and run the clinic and handed the clinic over to Izzie.
After learning Izzie had skin cancer and was initially refusing treatment, Miranda supported her through her surgery and cancer treatments better than her friends did. Feeling discontented with the general surgery program, Miranda was drawn towards pediatric surgery and was eventually offered a fellowship, but after emotional blackmail from her husband she had to decline and continue in general surgery while going through her divorce.
"Shut it! You don't get to talk anymore. You don't get to talk ever again."
"My husband informed me that if I accept the pediatrics fellowship, if I sign on for another 2 years of training, and the hours and the work load that come with it when I could be a general surgery attending, and make it home for dinner. He will divorce me. It's a big decision."
