Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is the lead character and a surgeon at Seattle Grace Hospital in the television series "Grey's Anatomy." At the start of the show, Meredith is one of five new surgical interns starting at Seattle Grace under the supervision of Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). The other interns were George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Hiegl), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and soon after starting Meredith moves in with George and Izzie.
On the night before her internship begins, Meredith has a one-night stand with Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) not knowing that he is an attending neurosurgeon at the hospital. Initially she tried to keep their relationship professional, but soon gave in and they started dating. This led to complications when seen together by Miranda, who lectured Derek about dating an intern. When they decided to make the relationship more serious, more problems were caused by the surprise arrival of Derek's wife, Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), whom Meredith didn't know existed. Derek leaves Meredith for Addison because "She's my wife", leaving Meredith devastated and she goes on a series of one-night stands trying to replace him before dating her vet, Finn Dandridge (Chris O'Donnell). After Meredith and Derek had sex at an event they attended with Finn and Addison, they decided to continue their relationship. After a series of break-ups, they got back together and arranged a wedding, but on the day of the wedding another tumor was found in Izzie's brain and they decided to let her have the wedding because of her serious condition. Meredith and Derek eventually married and wrote their wedding vows on a Post-It note. The vows were; "1. To love each other even when we hate each other, 2. To never walk away, 3. To take care of the other when they are old, senile, and smelly - 'this is forever.'" Meredith later finds out that she is pregnant with Derek's baby. When he is shot by Mr. Clark (Michael O'Neill), an angry relative of a patient who died in surgery, she has a miscarriage.
When Meredith begins working at Seattle Grace, she is recognized as the daughter of Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) by Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr), the Chief of Surgery. Ellis had previously had a long-running affair with Richard, but was now suffering from Alzheimer's. Meredith kept this hidden from her friends and colleagues, but it served as the inspiration for her to move into medicine after years of partying. As Ellis' Alzheimer's progresses, their relationship has ups and downs until she dies. This happens while Meredith is undergoing CPR after a ferryboat accident where she nearly dies. Her relationship with her father, Thatcher (Jeff Perry) fell off after her parents divorce. When she makes contact with him, she is surprised to find that she has two half sisters, Molly Thompson (Mandy Siegfried) and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), the latter of which also becomes a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. Later on, when Thatcher has liver failure and needs a transplant, Meredith donates part of her liver to him.
"You're not pregnant again, are you? Because I can't handle the extra months of bitchiness."
"Why can't I just be the happily ever after person? Why can't I believe in that?"
"I'm a surgeon. I do the rescuing. You are not my knight in shining whatever."
