Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle) is the beleaguered former rock star father of Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) and Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) on "Gossip Girl." The Humphrey family is somewhat divorced from the Upper East Side glitz and glamor. Even though Rufus had success with his band Lincoln Hawk, he has retired from the scene to run an art gallery. He wants his children to have the best education possible, so he sends them to fancy private schools in Manhattan, despite his reservations about the people they interact with there.
Rufus divorced his wife Alison before the series began because she was having an extramarital affair and the pair could not work out their differences. She now lives in Hudson, in upstate New York.
One of his longest-lasting relationships was with Lillian van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford), who he was attracted to before his marriage. She eventually chose to mary Bart Bass instead, but after Bass died, Lily and Rufus rekindled their relationship and eventually married.
Rufus's primary dramas relate to his children. After Dan got involved with drug addict Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg), he worked to prove that the baby she claimed is Dan's is not actually his. His daughter Jenny's manipulative ways, eventually force him to ship her upstate to live with her mother and come to terms with her actions.

"Do you want me to call off this wedding? And if you so much as nod yes, I will go out there and I will tell your fiancé and your guests they have to go home."
