Nina Sharp (Blair Brown) is the chief operating officer at Massive Dynamic. She is involved in the research and development of cutting edge technologies and was one of the first hires of Dr. William Bell (Leonard Nimoy), the founder of Massive Dynamic and ex-lab partner of Walter Bishop (John Noble). The character made her first appearance in the pilot episode.
Nina has worked for Massive Dynamic for more than 16 years. She is part of the think tank of this multimillion dollar global corporation and has led the company through its growth and foray into environmental, educational and entertainment sectors. She lost her arm in 1997 and owes a great deal to Massive Dynamic for developing and providing her with a lively robotic arm, thanks to the special design made by Dr. Bell himself. A flashback revealed that she lost her arm while extending it through a portal when she tried to stop Walter from entering an alternate universe.
Nina, heading Massive Dynamic during William Bell's absence, interacts with the FBI and Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) when an investigation into the company starts. She is uncomfortable about sharing information with Olivia but does so out of respect for her relationship with Olivia's supervisor Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick). Nina also reveals to Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) that she has known Walter since childhood.
Nina is a charismatic character full of leadership and with a connection to the alternate universe. She is positive even when she gets shot in the chest in an elevator toward the end of season 1, robbing her of the energy cell for her robotic arm. However, she is saved due to the Kevlar components in her chest and the efforts of the team at Massive Dynamic, especially Sam Weiss (Kevin Corrigan).
"My hand still gets sweaty on takeoff."
"I won't play coy, Phillip. I understand the FBI has opened an investigation into Massive Dynamic."
