The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday at 8pm on CBS. Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, it looks like two shows will have a stranglehold on the night: Mad Men for Drama and 30 Rock for Comedy, both coming in with an overwhelming lead in total nominations.

'Monk' and 'Psych' Review: TV's Top Detectives Back on the Case

Friday nights get a lot better tonight with the return of USA's two best shows, Monk at 9pm and Psych at 10pm. For Monk, this marks the beginning of the end as it's the obsessive detective's final season.

Monk and Psych are an interesting pair because they are so similar, yet so different. Both are expertly crafted character-based comedies with a ton of laughs and compelling mysteries. However, Monk seems to skew older, a throwback to the days of Perry Mason and Murder She Wrote, while Psych, with its nonstop barrage of pop culture references, is much younger and hipper.

The defective detective is back to help the San Francisco police to solve yet another baffling case! While this is certainly good news for Tony Shalhoub fans, the return of Monk for its eight season also marks the beginning of the end for the police procedural comedy. But there's a silver lining in the midst of this sad reality: As the series concludes, Adrian Monk will finally get some answers surrounding the truth behind his wife Trudy's death.

When we last saw the detective series, Monk was fighting City Hall in attempt to preserve the parking garage where he's wife was killed. Though he lost the political battle and made an emotional farewell to the parking garage, his fight to preserve the memory of his beloved wife wasn't in vain because the new playground set to rise in the garage's place was named after Trudy.

Monk: Sharona To Return For Final Season

This summer, get ready to say goodbye to one of the most successful series in basic cable history. As reported previously, the USA network decided to put an end to the long-running comedy Monk for its eighth and final season. But before the defective detective solves his last case, he'll be reuniting with a long lost friend.

According the network's press release, original cast member Bitty Schram will be reprising her role as Sharona for a guest appearance during the eighth and final season of Monk.

Sci Fi and USA networks welcome the New Year with new episodes of their signature series. According to The Futon Critic, which has exclusively confirmed the networks' plans, Monk and Psych will resume their current seasons on Friday, January 9 at 9/8c and 10/9c, respectively.

Psych, which stars James Roday a young crime consultant for the Santa Barbara, California Police Department whose "heightened observational skills" him to convince people that he is psychic, has recently been renewed by the USA network for a fourth season after a record-breaking summer. Monk, on the other hand, is presently on its seventh season and has just reached the 100th episode milestone before the show went into a summer season hiatus.

While some celebrities like to get their names on tabloids for all the wrong reasons, a number of others are exerting their time and efforts towards meaningful causes such as charity fund-raisers and awareness events. Such is the case for Hector Elizondo, who plays Dr. Neven Bell in the hit USA series, Monk. In fact, the 71-year-old Emmy-award winning actor will join California’s second lady, Patricia Garamendi will be headlining an event called the 3rd National Concepts in Care Conference sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. The event will take place in San Francisco on September 18.

Elizondo, who also recently appeared in the series Cane as Pancho Duque, will be speaking to audiences about his experiences caring for his mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a fact he shares with Garamendi.

In tongith's installment, the brilliant detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is set to go up against a chess genius, a character fashioned after Bobby Fisher. No wonder Tony Shalhoub plays his role as detective Adrian Monk in the comedy Monk so well. Like his character, he is also a perfectionist.

Shalhoub talked to the Detroit Free Press about his early days working as a waiter. “I was always on the verge of being fired because the manager kept saying, ‘You have to go faster!'” he said. “I wanted to make sure everything was right. And you didn't want to throw food at these people. I would say, ‘Are the people complaining?' They'd say, ‘No, we just see you're not working too fast enough.' I just wanted to make sure I had it all right.”

'Monk' Returns with a New Therapist for Season 7

On the heels of the death of Stanley Kamel, who played the cranky yet incredibly patient shrink Dr. Charles Kroger on Monk, the Emmy Award-winning police procedural dramedy will be enlisting a new therapist for Tony Shalhoub's obsessive compulsive character.

Joining Monk for season 7, which kicks off on July 18, is none other than Emmy-winning and Golden Globe-nominated Hector Elizondo. The 71-year-old actor has participated in over 80 movies, including Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, where he played the head of the queen's security service and eventual love interest to Julie Andrews's character. 'Til Death' Actor to Appear on 'Monk'

Brad Garrett has become a household name as one of the stars of the long-running sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond and his most recent show 'Til Death. Now, the 48-year-old actor will be branching out to yet another comedy series. This time, however, it comes with a touch of police procedural drama.

The ‘Til Death actor has just sign on to appear on Monk's upcoming seventh season, which is expected to premiere on July 18. According to TV Guide, Garrett is set to play a handyman who helps Monk lead star Tony Shalhoub with his home renovations.

NBC Takes Out 'Monk' and 'Psych'

NBC has decided to pull out Sunday night repeats of Monk and Psych, television shows that are originally broadcast on the USA Network. According to an updated schedule released by the network, the two shows will be replaced by a two-hour block of The Office, at least for the next two weekends.

The switch, which isn't that surprising given that both Monk and Psych didn't post good numbers, brings to a close NBC Universal's strike-era programming stunt of giving USA Network's top-rated series a shot on the broadcast network.

'Monk' Actor Stanley Kamel Dead at 65

Actor Stanley Kamel, whose most prominent role was as Adrian Monk's psychiatrist on the USA comedy Monk, passed away yesterday at the age of 65. According to Access Hollywood, his agents found him in his California home, dead from a likely heart attack.

Though never a huge star, Kamel found steady work in Tv and movies for five decades. In all that time, it was his recent role as Monk's cranky yet incredibly patient shrink that gained him the most fame. Appearing in more than 40 episodes, starting with the shows pilot, Kamel's Dr. Charles Kroger was a staple of the show.

Second Half of 'Monk' Season 6 Premieres Tonight

NBC, the network in the worst shape going into the writers in regards to quantity of available original content, are bringing two of their cable series up to the big leagues. USA, a member of the ever-expanding NBC Universal clan, will see both Monk and Psych move from the relative anonymity of basic cable to network television in March 2008. The series will air on NBC Sunday nights. Both Monk and Psych will be airing original episodes on USA beginning this January. Those new episodes will the be re-purposed for NBC and re-aired on the mother network beginning in March.

USA Network rolled out a double-shot of season premieres Friday night – Monk returned for its sixth season, while Psych was on tap for its sophomore season. Even though both shows are dramedy detective shows, they each have their own distinctive quirks that set them apart.

Monk, the more senior show, kicked off its new season by bringing back one of their strongest guest stars – Sarah Silverman as the Monk-obsessed fan Marcy Maven. Marcy needs Monk's help when her dog Otto is accused of killing her neighbor's wife by mauling her to death. The tricky part is that her dog died three days before the lady died. Even trickier, Monk doesn't want her anywhere near him.
