John Hawkes Gets 'Lost'

Now, that was quick.

I only spotted the Lost casting call for a new recurring character yesterday, and one day after, they've already taken someone to play the role. John Hawkes is set to join the sixth and final season of the ABC series, which premieres next year.

Even if you don't know the name, you know the face of William Sanderson. He's one of those iconic character actors who can show up anywhere. On television he's been on Newhart, Deadwood, Lost and his current gig as Sheriff Bud Dearborn on HBO's vampire drama True Blood, which returns for season 2 June 14. In films, he's been in everything from Blade Runner to The Rocketeer to the Civil War drama Gods and Generals.

BuddyTV spoke to William Sanderson about his career and the new season of True Blood. Sanderson talked about vampires, his guest appearance on this season of Lost, and an upcoming Starz documentary about character actors he'll be appearing in.

The epitome of an empty suit, E.B. Farnum on the HBO Western Deadwood became mayor by default when no one else wanted the position during a town meeting. Pointlessly proud of his job, he took great pride in acting like the leader of the town when, in reality, he had no power and asked Al Swearengen for permission to do anything. His silly preening and ineffectual leadership certainly make him one of the worst politicians in TV history.

'Friday Night Lights' Enlists 'Deadwood' Actress to Play Matt's Mother

Matt Saracen will have a lot on his plate to deal with as Friday Night Lights returns for a third season on October 1 on Direct TV and on NBC in 2009. The shy and nervous former backup quarterback was thrust into the spotlight when Jason Street suffered a career-ending injury and now has to with the spotlight on and off the field, after being completely ignored by everyone for years. As for his personal life, Matt lives alone with his grandmother, who suffers from senile dementia, and has a poor relationship with his father Henry, who is serving in Iraq. But all that might change as someone from his past re-enters his life.

According to TV Guide, Zach Gilford's character will be getting a mom this season and she comes in the form of Kim Dickens.

'Deadwood' Star Will Do Some 'Damages'

Last week, FX announced that Academy Award-winner William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider-Woman) will join the cast of Damages for its upcoming second season. This week, another actor has been recruited to add even more zest to the legal drama.

Timothy Olyphant, perhaps best known for playing sheriff Seth Bullock on HBO’s Deadwood, has signed on for a season-long arc on Damages, playing a guy who enters Ellen’s (Rose Byrne) life and becomes entangled in both her personal life as she deals with her recent loss and professional struggles with boss, Patty Hewes (Glenn Close).

John Hawkes was famously known for his role on HBO's Deadwood. He played Sol Star, the life-long best friend of Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and partner in the hardware business.
