24 People's Choice Award Nominees: 'True Blood,' 'Gossip Girl' and the Usual Suspects

This morning the People's Choice Award nominations were revealed, and as always, it's populism at its best. On the TV side, the nominees often look like the top of the Nielsen ratings list, with a few notable and surprising exceptions. Shows like True Blood and Gossip Girl crept into the Favorite TV Actress categories while Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show features Lost, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.

However, those are the very cool exceptions. For the most part, the list is full of CSI, NCIS, Grey's Anatomy, Two and a Half Men and other top-rated shows. Here are the major television nominees for this year's People's Choice Awards.

Gregory Itzin Returns to '24'

Cue one more familiar face in the upcoming season of 24: Gregory Itzin is confirmed to return to the show's eighth season as crazed former president Charles Logan.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reports that Itzin, who currently holds a recurring role in the CBS drama The Mentalist, will return for a multi-episode arc at the tail-end of the upcoming season, which begins January 17. The former president will return when the current president, Allison Taylor, reluctantly enlists him for help in an escalating diplomatic crisis.

'24' Season 8 First Look: Jack Bauer Never Gets To Settle Down

And then we realize we're less than two months away before the next season of 24 begins. You know, a lot of loose ends, about Jack's health for one thing, but it seems we're all past that--and we're going into another 24 hours of the stuff we've come to expect from Jack Bauer and company.

Here's what we already know: this season will be set in New York, and will involve Jack (who's already retired, I must note) stopping an attempt to assassinate President Hassan, who is in the country to broker a groundbreaking deal with President Taylor.

Looks like there really is good reason for 24 fans to think that next year's season 8 might be the last. Count the "business decisions" bit, and what seems to be an effort to round up the whole story. Oh, and the pretty high-caliber roster of stars.

Throw in another name to that list: David Anders has ferried his way from Alias and Heroes to this season of 24 and, as his rep told E! Online, he'll be playing a recurring character on the upcoming season. There's no revealing about who he'll play exactly, however; the only thing they're telling us is, "he will be in a handful of episodes."

If 24 decides to call it a day at the end of the eighth season, it won't be because the producers wanted to put an end to it, or Kiefer Sutherland wanted out, or they've run out of stories to tell. It'll be, simply, a business decision.

Comic-Con 2009: A Plot to Kill the President on '24' Season 8

Today's Comic-Con panel for 24 revealed quite a few details about what fans will see when the show returns in 2010 for the eighth longest day in Jack Bauer's life. There are new details on the characters, the terrorist plot, and gunplay.

According to producers, the main plot for season 8 will tie directly into what happened during season 7, marking the first time two seasons have had overlapping terrorist plots. However, season 8 will deal with a new threat as there's a presidential assassination on the horizon.

24: Kiefer Sutherland's Headbutting Case Dropped

The Manhattan District Attorney's office in New York City has officially dropped the misdemeanor assault charge against 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, which he incurred after he allegedly gave a headbutt to fashion designer Jack McCollough in a party there a few months back. There have been multiple reports as to why, but it all amounts to one thing: it was nothing, really.

San Diego Comic-Con Releases Friday Schedule

First, let's get this out in the open: initial reports said that Supernatural and Smallville will have their panels on Sunday so don't freak out that the shows aren't included in the first two days.

Other than that, Friday's schedule looks amazing. Although my TV favorites aren't on the list, my movie favorites are. There a a couple more timing conflicts and I'm guessing that people are going to have to make some tough choices. When in doubt, stick with Whedon, Rodriguez, Cameron and Jackson.

24: 'Desperate' Boot Camper Joins Anil Kapoor's Team

Actor Clayne Crawford has signed on to star as man who's played a significant part in the past of CTU analyst Dana Walsh, to be played by Katee Sackhoff. The catch? The Emmys Report: Drama Lead Actor and Actress Races

A lot is made of the overwhelming number of great leading roles for women on cable, but if the official Emmy ballots are any indication, women are still a minority when it comes to starring TV roles. On the official ballot sent to Emmy voters, there are 70 contenders for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but only 48 for the Lead Actress category.

But the numbers don't help the major networks. Despite the fact that more than 60 percent of the potential nominees come from the five major networks, it's the cable guys and gals who take the lead at the Emmys.

24: Katee Sackhoff Joins The Cast (But Almost Didn't, Actually)

Make that one more name for the cast of the eighth season of 24: former Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff is jumping into the award-winning action series, which is headed to the Big Apple by January next year.

Her character? Sources told Entertainment Weekly that she'll play Dana Walsh, a highly respected yet down-to-earth data analyst at the revived CTU's New York branch. The role also has a love interest tied to it--her character will be romantically involved with Davis Cole, CTU's field ops head and Jack Bauer wannabe which will be (still surprisingly) played by Freddie Prinze Jr.

24: Headbutt Controversy Almost Cost Kiefer Sutherland A Movie Role

Kiefer Sutherland and Jack McCollough may have patched up after the headbutting incident between the two early this month, but apparently there was more at stake for the 24 star. All that coverage about who did what and why--all those finger-pointing, in other words--allegedly almost cost the actor a role in an upcoming movie.

A source told New York Daily News that the cast and crew of the upcoming Twelve were monitoring the progress of Sutherland's case very closely. The film's director, Joel Schumacher, wasn't happy with all the negative press coverage surrounding the actor. "For the entire week following [the incident], Kiefer's drama was the white elephant in the room," the source said. "Joel did not want to talk about it and instructed his cast not to mention anything around him or to the press."
