'Who Wants to be a Superhero?' Winner Says He's Living The Dream

On September 6, Texan detective Jarrett Crippen was crowned the second winner of the SCI-FI Channel's reality series, Who Wants to be a Superhero? Emerging victorious from the competition means Crippen's alter ego, The Defuser, will be featured in a comic book written by the legendary Stan Lee and published by Dark Horse Comics. Additionally, Crippen's character will appear in an upcoming original movie by the network.

"Most kids grow up reading comic books and dreaming about being a superhero. It's taken 38 years, but I'm living that dream," Crippen said in a statement. “I can't express how this experience has changed my life for the better. The only word that comes to mind is… incredible!"

Who Wants to be a Superhero?'s second season came to an end tonight, and a new ‘Superhero' legend in waiting was crowned, but not before the producers and Sci Fi channel figured out how to stretch the finale to its limits. What we were expecting to be two solid packed hours of competition turned out to be a painfully plodding mess. But hey, the camp dial was on 11, and Mr. Lee did not fail to deliver.

The first challenge involved Hyper-Strike, Hygena, and The Defuser once again playing with electricity in an attempt to thwart one of Dr. Dark's evil plans. One wrinkle though: this time there are attack dogs. Don't worry, our faux heroes are decked out in protective gear, but then again this is just another example of how Who wants to be a Superhero is digging into a little bit of Fear Factor shtick.

After his quest for superheroes on Who Wants to Be A Superhero?, show creator Stan Lee will now take on another protagonist and she comes in the form of Paris Hilton (The Simple Life).

Lee, an 85-year-old writer and the Chairman Emeritus of Marvel Comics, is famed for co-creating Spider-Man, X-Men, Silver Surfer and Fantastic Four. Now, he attempts to make an animated cartoon TV show with the Hilton heiress despite her controversial reputation in the eyes of the public.

Feedback, a fictional superhero portrayed by Matthew Atherton on the reality television series Who Wants to Be a Superhero?, will be making his movie debut on Saturday, August 25 at 9/8c in the new Sci Fi Channel original movie MegaSnake.

Noted for his distinct equipment and several superpowers, Feedback has a dampening suit that can generate a counter-field and absorb the powers from video games, a body armor and wrist device monitor. While he is known for his force feedback power emulation and ability to blast off electrical energy, he also has a several weaknesses such as memory loss, headaches and nausea caused by high-energy fields.

After last week's double elimination on Who Wants to be a Superhero?, the potentials head downstairs to discover their lair has been ransacked and their "secret identities" stolen from the safe. The Defuser, naturally, takes the lead and orders everyone not to touch anything. Whip-Snap, for reasons unclear, breaks down and says she can't handle this anymore. It's weird, because you sometimes forget that there are real people competing on this show, even though they're almost always in character.

Also missing is Stan Lee's first pencil, then the main man gets on the big screen and tells them something else was stolen: a $50,000 check for the Friends of the Urban Forest charity from Stan's good friends at Esurance. It's quite obvious the supervillain they'll be battling today is overt product placement. Agent Erin Esurance, the pink-haired animated figure from the Esurance commercials, gives them their assignment: head to the boardwalk and intercept a courier passing the identities.

Who Wants to be a Superhero? enters its third week of campy competition with a familiar, yet interesting twist. This week's villain, Dr. Dark, challenges the would be comic heroes to a pursuit through an amusement park. In the end, the group will be cut from eight to seven, or so it seemed until the shocking elimination round. For the first time, the heroes were split into teams, but Dr. Dark had some information that would strike at the foundation of team work, the revelation that there was a mole within the group.

SciFi Channel has added a new dimension to the second season of its campy hit Who Wants to be a Superhero?, and this angle is a little more down to earth. The show currently courts individuals who create a character for themselves, complete with super power, who then compete through elimination trials. The winner gets a comic book based on their character and presumably a made for SciFI channel film. With the second season, SciFI will be opening the contest to at-home creators as well.

Who Wants to be a Superhero? is a reality- science fiction show hosted by legendary comic-book creator Stan Lee. The show features contestants that are challenged to create their very own superhero. Every week, one or more of the superheroes deemed the least deserving is eliminated. The grand prize for the winning superhero is to have his or her character star in a Dark Horse Comics comic book written by Lee. In addition, an original movie starring the winning superhero will be aired on Sci Fi Channel. The winner also gets a trip for two to Universal Studios Florida to participate in the park's Parade of Superheroes.
