'New Moon' Scores Big In Opening Weekend

The Twilight Saga: New Moon had a really big opening weekend, earning an estimated total of $140.7 million in its first three days in theaters. It was more than twice as much as the grosses of the first film in the Twilight series, which earned $69.6 million when it opened this time last year.

However, New Moon failed to break the record for the most earnings a film took in opening weekend. That record still goes to The Dark Knight, which earned $158.4 million on its opening weekend. New Moon comes in third place of the top 10 best openings of all time, though, and to boot, it's the only non-summer film to take the honor.

The Vatican Condemns 'New Moon'

I sometimes wonder what the people at the Vatican do all day. Evidently, they surf the Internet to find the most recent craze in order to condemn it. According to Britain's Daily Mail, the Vatican released a statement about the newest chapter of the Twilight saga on Thursday. Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, who is the Vatican's culture council leader, wanted to clear up the church's views on the New Moon.

He said that the series is a "mixture of excesses aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element" and that New Moon "is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message." Perazzolo claims that the film should be "of concern."

'New Moon' Breaks Midnight Screening Records

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has been keeping up with the presage numbers. New Moon is rocketing through box offices and now has the largest opening night ever. Midnight screenings across the nation were packed with giddy fangirls and fanboys alike. Summit estimates that it earned $26.3 million dollars after early morning calculations.

The previous record was held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, set this last summer at $22.2 million dollars for its midnight openings. This only helps to fuel the Harry Potter vs Twilight rivalry that has been raging for years. Potter fans have been out numbered by New Moon fans this time and each series only has two more movies in the franchise.

I'm guessing you're reading this right now getting really excited for New Moon to show. Maybe you're lucky enough to have tickets to the midnight screenings. Maybe you've already seen the film. Me, I'm still looking for someone to watch it with, but yes, I am going to watch New Moon, never mind that I'm not really a fan. I feel that this will be a much better movie than Twilight (maybe it's because I now understand what the hype is all about) and many others have confirmed that feeling. Here's why:

'New Moon' Review: Wildly Entertaining and Heartfelt

Unlike most Twilight fans, I went to the theatre yesterday to get a sneak peek of New Moon with really low expectations. I didn't like the trailers, I was skeptical about the adaptation and I really didn't want to be disappointed in my beloved series. In my mind, the story of New Moon is just too depressing and emotionally complex for movie form. I put so much emphasis on the emotions surrounding Bella's plight that I forgot how enthralled I was when I read it. And luckily, New Moon the movie does the exact same thing. I was enraptured from beginning to end.

This should come as good news to any Twilight fan: above all else, New Moon is wildly entertaining. The story, which follows Bella (Kristen Stewart) as she navigates life without Edward, remains true to the book for all intents and purposes. The changes are a welcome addition. Melissa Rosenberg and Chris Weitz were careful to put in elements of humor to keep the feeling light. The comedic elements mostly come from Bella's human friends, played by Michael Welch, Anna Kendrick, Justin Chon, and Christian Serratos, who give non-fans the welcome reality check of "what is wrong with this girl?"

Admit it, You're Nervous About 'New Moon'

I'm going to be honest: my Twilight obsession has waned over the last couple of months. I'm not sure why exactly but I just know I stopped reading Twilight news (because it was a lot of the same) and I had no interest in rereading the books or rewatching the movie. I assumed, as most would, that my obsession would start to rebuild steam around the release of New Moon. To my surprise, nothing has changed. I didn't even buy midnight tickets!

I know what you must be thinking right now - This is not a true Twilight fan. That's fair to assume. I can recount the amount of times I've read through the series, the number of times I've watched the movie, or even tell you that my New Moon trailer analysis was listed as one of the best by Twilight Lexicon. But does all that really matter? Does that still make me a member of the group as of today?

Well, it's actually stuff that we already know, more or less: how Stephenie Meyer conceived of the books, how the books became published, how it became such a big thing, how the movies came to fore. The interesting tidbit, however, lies in what Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke said about the franchise's stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

Ahh, New Moon is coming. A week or so, yes! I'm seeing the trailers in the cinemas and on television, the web is abound with conversation about the movie, and of course, fans are out for details on what happens on screen and off screen. Bit one: MTV is screening two New Moon behind-the-scenes specials this Monday, November 16. At 10:30pm, New Moon Revealed the folks at MTV News answer five pretty big questions fans have about the movie series that'll take over the world again. You know, stuff about Taylor Lautner almost losing the Jacob role, or how fame has changed Robert Pattinson.

'Twilight' Officially Goes A-Twitter

I just heard that the Twilight movies have been given their official Twitter page. Nothing much on there, really. Just a handful of updates so far, some from New Moon director Chris Weitz, with him talking about what's happening on the film's post-production so far.

"At sound mixing stage," he tweeted a few hours from the time I write this. "Introducing the werewolves. Trying to get perfect bass rumble." And then he proceeds to show a photo of the mixing desk, which looks obviously intimidating, with all those faders.

Robert Pattinson as Prince Harry?

And yay, the list of artists for the New Moon soundtrack has been released! Indeed, it's gone the indie direction, after Twilight going the more pop-rock route. Now, we've already heard of Death Cab for Cutie's contribution to the soundtrack, which'll be released as the first single, but the other fourteen songs feature a mix of artists that you've probably heard on your friendly alternative radio station, or your friendly indie MP3 blog, or maybe haven't heard at all. I'll admit I haven't heard of some of these--or didn't know it was them.

Being a closet indie kid, I couldn't be happier of the recognition, unexpected as it could be. Here goes the list, then, plus a quick introduction by way of YouTube and stock knowledge. Ready?

When the new trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon is only the third most-talked about event from the MTV Video Music Awards, you know the show was great. I tune in every year and have been severely disappointed for the last couple of VMAs. Britney's "comeback" was a dud and the Jonas Brothers don't belong at an event like this.

But the 2009 VMAs were a breath of fresh air, with controversy courtesy of Kanye West, a swell of support and love for Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga stepping out and becoming the most awesomely crazy person in the entertainment industry, taking over the title from Bjork and Bai Ling.

For those of you that haven't heard due to all the Kanye West is a douchebag news coming out of the MTV VMAs last night, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart unveiled a brand new New Moon trailer last night. So much pressure was being put on the Twilight crew to deliver ratings, I'm sure they were happy to not be the most talked about items of the evening. I'll still be a bit bitter that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart both decided to avoid the red carpet and just hid backstage. Where was the Rob reaction shot when Lady Gaga smeared blood all over herself? Where was Kristen Stewart's contemptuous look when Kanye West stepped all over the beautifully talented, innocent as a kitten, Taylor Swift?

I know, I know, they deserve their privacy and I'll eventually get over it. Lucky for me, my other idol and obsession Kelly Clarkson already voiced her opinion of the Kanye West is a Douchebag saga.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that Kristen Stewart is a relatively established actress before the Twilight films came along, which explains for why she wasn't nominated for Choice Breakout Female at this year's Teen Choice Awards. And then you remember that she's done a couple of movies that I saw before: Panic Room, with Jodie Foster, and that children's flick Zathura. I even told my sister that when the movie came on the television one day. "Want a frozen Kristen Stewart?" I said when I realized she was on it, too.

Amidst all the "ohmeegowsh!" type of articles about her that you see pretty much everywhere post-Twilight, it's quite nice to see an interview on her that does something else. Not so frantic, actually.

So I was being sarcastic, sure, but first, the good news for you Twilight fans: another trailer for New Moon will premiere at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which happens on September 13. In between performances from the likes of Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and hip-hop couple Beyonc?? and Jay-Z, you'll see Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner go up the stage and introduce the trailer.

Well, surprise, surprise. Last year was Paramore's turn on the spotlight when, after releasing two songs on the Twilight soundtrack, they were catapulted from emo-indie obscurity to wider fame. Maybe this year it's Death Cab for Cutie's turn.

I'm going to be a music snob for a bit and say I hope it doesn't make DCFC that big. Then again, they've managed for the longest time, being one of the more known bands on the indie circuit, releasing numerous albums, and finding their songs used on shows such as The OC and Six Feet Under. But with the New Moon soundtrack heading in a more indie direction, thanks in part to Stephenie Meyer's deeper involvement, the band finds themselves on the verge of being introduced to a much, much, much wider audience with "Meet Me At The Equinox", the leading single off the soundtrack, whose music video will debut on September 13 at the MTV website.

Now, Twilight fans, me calling this a "what the?" moment doesn't mean Robert Pattinson did a stupid thing. It's a loose definition: I find this story a bit surprising, if not outrageous, but I understand where he's coming from here. Imagine being hounded every day by rumors that you're hooking up with your co-star--and they're persistent despite the consistent denials, like those photos at the Kings of Leon concert.

'Eclipse' Starts Production, And I Need A Breather

Since my last Twilight roundup a couple of days ago, it feels that so many things have happened. Yes, I skipped it yesterday because I was busy with other stuff and there wasn't really much to write about, except perhaps for the casting of Jodelle Ferland as Bree--which she was asked to keep secret, oddly, until everyone else figured out who she is based on the way she described her character. Oh, and my little mea culpa: after I wrote that roundup, I saw another photo confirming that it is Rob and Kristen. So, were they kissing? No time for that--Eclipse has begun shooting, three months after New Moon wrapped up.

And that's exactly why I feel a little rushed. If you've been reading some of my stuff over the past few months, you'd know that I've been feeling a bit bad for the film series' cast, because they don't really get that much of a break from being their respective characters, thanks to Summit's plan to release the Twilight films within less than a year of each other. They do need their breaks, and the few breaks they get, we get photos. Like, you know, those "smooching" photos at a Kings of Leon concert?

I'm guessing you've already picked up the latest copy of Entertainment Weekly, or at the very least, saw the magazine's feature on New Moon online, as part of their fall movie preview. To be honest, there weren't really many new details on the article: it's stuff we've already heard about, from Chris Weitz coming in as director to Taylor Lautner buffing up to become a bulkier Jacob. And then there are the behind-the-scenes stuff which actually sound fun. But, in a pretty odd manner, I realized that--unlike in Twilight, where the attention was on Robert Pattinson--this time around, it's Taylor's turn on the hot seat.

The Deep End: What is the Subtext of the Leaked New Moon Trailer?

This morning, there was only one thing on every Twilight fan's mind: the New Moon trailer airing before Summit's Bandslam. Remember Bandslam? We told you about it last week when Vanessa Hudgens released some more of her personal collection of nude photos. But, although it was a fabulous publicity stunt to try to make Hudgens relevant again, attaching the New Moon trailer to the flick proved to be much more effective. Lucky for you, you don't need to go to the theater to see the trailer because it leaked on the internet this morning.

After months and months of anticipation (or at least since the MTV Movie Awards), Twilight fans were finally treated to more scenes. Or were they?
