After airing the first seven episodes of The Nine in October and November of 2006, ABC pulled the show off the air, and later canceled it, though six episodes remained unaired. Starting two weeks ago, ABC began to burn them off Wednesday nights at 10pm, but after just two episodes with unbelievably low ratings, the final four episodes are being shelved yet again, to be replaced by an ABC News inside look at NASCAR. I guess airing just nine episodes of the show is a note of playful irony on ABC's part.

ABC's 'The Nine' Returns Tonight

ABC announced last month that it would be bringing back its critically-acclaimed but low-rated drama series, The Nine, and tonight, the first of the show's six final episodes will air on the network.

The series, which follows the story of nine survivors of a hostage standoff following a failed bank robbery, debuted last October on a timeslot following Lost. Despite its strong lead-in, the show averaged a mere 8 million viewers during its initial run. After only seven episodes, the network took The Nine off its schedule, and in March announced that it had cancelled the series. As a result, the show was not included in the network's 2007 fall lineup, which was announced in May.

ABC Brings Back 'The Nine'

After officially taking The Nine off the air due to poor ratings, ABC has decided to revive the remaining episodes of the crime drama series. Beginning Wednesday, August 1, the formerly axed show will return to its 10pm niche as it previously occupied last fall.

Created by Hank Steinberg, The Nine premiered on October 4, 2006 on ABC. With a 13-episode order, the network positioned the series in the 10pm slot after Lost. However, after airing only seven episodes, the network decided to take the series out of its lineup due to poor ratings. Following this move, much hype surfaced the news regarding the fate of the show, whether it’s already canceled or just on hiatus. Unfortunately, the network officially pulled the plug on The Nine on May 15.

The Nine: On Hiatus? Much-hyped and critically acclaimed coming into the season, The Nine failed to gain a wide viewership, even with it's cushy time slot. You'd think that an edgy, high-concept serial drama would thrive in the post-Lost time slot, but, obviously, this was not the case. The Nine regularly retained less than half of Lost's audience.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Hank Steinberg, creator of The Nine, in an exclusive interview. Hank was more than genial in his talk with us, and expressed how confident ABC was with The Nine and the concept behind it. As we all know, ratings trump all else in television.

Exclusive Interview: Hank Steinberg, Creator of The Nine

Recently, Hank Steinberg, creator of The Nine, was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to sit down with BuddyTV for an interview and answer some questions about his new show, The Nine. The Nine is about nine survivors of a 52-hour hostage situation in a bank. The Nine struggle to grapple with their lives after the event, and will forever be linked by what happened inside that bank.

Hank Steinberg is best known as the creator and show runner of the CBS hit drama Without a Trace. He also wrote the highly-acclaimed HBO film "61*". The Nine airs Wednesdays at 10PM ET/PT on ABC.

The Nine Spoilers

The Nine is fast becoming a favorite of many a TV viewer. The interest amongst those who watch is rabid, which bodes well for The Nine's future as, at the very least, a cult hit. Troublesome, however, are the ratings for The Nine, which continue to dip as the weeks go on. Not horribly so, but enough where fans should probably begin to worry.

As such, spoilers for The Nine have been in great demand and we have some for you after the jump.

The Nine Spoilers

All Spoilers are direct quotes from Isabelle's latest exclusive TVj Sessions.

It takes the full concentration of the viewer, who must recall information from the entire run of the show and actively attempt to figure out what the hell is going at least a couple of times per episode. Even then, the surprises and twists come out of nowhere and punch the viewer in the proverbial stomach. AND EVEN THEN, there are still nagging loose ends and thought-provoking cliffhangers to deal with. After an episode of Lost, you could use a stiff drink (or a cigarette or a trip to the opium den). After I watch Lost, I either want to keep watching Lost (DVDs are the best) or do nothing. What I especially don't want to do is switch gears and watch something else that stimulates me intellectually. This is why ABC is making a foolish decision in placing newcomer The Nine in the seemingly coveted post-Lost time slot.

Well, unless you're a terrible, terrible person like me (or, possibly, you). I always root for shows to fail miserably, even when I've never even seen an episode of said show. But, there are fundamental truths to life, and one of them is this: New TV shows will be taken off the air unceremoniously and without remorse, like a court jester banished to the guillotine.

Gist of the Show:

Nine people are bound by some unknown force after they experience a bank robbery (and subsequent stand-off) together. The format of The Nine is similar to Lost: every episode reveals a couple more minutes of the robbery and stand-off.

Cast Member Looking To Reclaim Former Glory:

Baby-faced Scott Wolf, who still looks exactly like he did during his "Party of Five" days.

Similar in Theme to:

Lost

Time Slot Competition:

CSI: NY, Kidnapped

Likelihood of Second Season:

75%

Final Word:

ABC has given The Nine the all-important post-Lost time slot. They are obviously confident in The Nine and expect it to become a hit. The previews, however, have left a lot to be desired. It feels like a two-bit version of Lost, but with the mystical mysterious moved from a desert island to an urban setting. Also, watching any show after Lost is an inevitable letdown.
