This season of The Mentalist has forced Jane to endure a disconnect with the Red John case--and of course, it's an uncomfortable thing, especially if you have a very personal stake in the serial killer you're pursuing. They've had some luck before, but thanks to his tendencies and other past events, the case was passed on to Bosco.

They've long been hinting about a dark secret between Bosco and Lisbon. He loves her? Possibly. Did they do something together? Maybe--the parallels between that secret and the other secret between Rigsby and Van Pelt is just irresistible. Did he kill someone, and she helped along, as Jane suggested? Possibly. But who really knows? It did open a new can of worms to play with--and suddenly Bosco is not the good person he claims to be, not by the book when he had Jane arrested.

But admittedly the most interesting bit from last week's episode was seeing Jane deal with a stint in jail. Not surprisingly, he gets the favors of a handful of inmates, but still, it's funny how he did it, really. Freak them out and just be friends with them? Oh, Jane, you are classic.

Gregory Itzin Returns to '24'

Cue one more familiar face in the upcoming season of 24: Gregory Itzin is confirmed to return to the show's eighth season as crazed former president Charles Logan.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reports that Itzin, who currently holds a recurring role in the CBS drama The Mentalist, will return for a multi-episode arc at the tail-end of the upcoming season, which begins January 17. The former president will return when the current president, Allison Taylor, reluctantly enlists him for help in an escalating diplomatic crisis.

Isn't it about time that Patrick Jane--former fake psychic turned CBI consultant, as he loves to insist--tackle something of the supernatural kind?

I mean, think of his past day job. "I see your dead husband," he'd probably go, "and he's saying this and that and this and that." And then he'd piss off Red John and have him kill his wife and child, which led him to that psychiatrist, which led him here, and us, here.

Is it just me, or is there going to be a bit more tension on The Mentalist this season?

Never mind the Rigsby-Van Pelt story. It's time to explore whatever it is between Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon! And perhaps about time, right? He's annoying, she sticks to the rules, it got both of them into trouble, and then this Sam Bosco guy comes in, and riles up both of them. No mention of Jane's hair. No mention of Lisbon's past, either.

I remember watching the Emmys over the weekend, and seeing Simon Baker present an award. I know he's Australian, but I can't get used to hearing him with an Australian accent, and a pretty thick one, too. How does he do it?

Maybe I should go explore his speech patterns. But that's a different show altogether.

The most-watched new show last fall, it earned Simon Baker an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Actor, and was recently given the coveted post-CSI time slot. The Mentalist's season 2 returns for more of Patrick Jane's unorthodox but effective methods, and the way everyone around him--Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt--react, positively or otherwise.

CBS Announces Fall Premiere Dates

Today CBS announced when its fall shows will premiere, and many of the dates are easy to remember because CBS is essentially launching all of its shows in a single week. From Monday, September 21 to Sunday, September 27, CBS will premiere all but two of its shows.

Those exceptions include the newest season of Survivor, which premieres one week early to allow a two-hour premiere on Thursday. September 17, and the series premiere of Three Rivers starring Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin which comes Sunday, October 4, one week late to allow The Amazing Race to have a two-hour premiere.

'The Mentalist' Moved to Thursday For a Reason

CBS had a problem last season - it's the only broadcast network which saw more viewers from last year, but it still had less advertising revenue than its previous year because of a "depressed market." One of the changes it is affecting then is moving The Mentalist, described by critics as broadcast TV's only real new hit this season, from Tuesday to Thursday nights at 10pm. The reason for the move, as expected, is strategic, because Thursdays are important for networks as they seek income from advertisers such as film studios looking ahead to the weekend. CBS adds that it sees Jay Leno's new comedy, set for a 10pm airing every night, on NBC as an opportunity to win the hour.

"No matter how well he does, there's going to be more (audience) share available at 10 o'clock for people who put on great dramas," CBS Corp. chief executive Leslie Moonves said, "and that's what we do."

Continuing in this exciting week of Fall schedules, CBS revealed its lineup today, and while many shows remain fixed, there are some big moves.?? The Mentalist, this past season's top new show, will get the coveted post-CSI timeslot Thursdays at 10pm.

And one day after NBC officially cancelled Medium, CBS scooped it up and Patricia Arquette will now see ghosts right after Jennifer Love Hewitt does the same thing on Ghost Whisperer.

How 'Lie to Me' Differs From 'The Mentalist'

At first glimpse, FOX's Lie to Me appears to have a similar premise to CBS' The Mentalist. That's because both series revolves around a main character that makes use of his powers of observation to uncover the truth and solve crimes. But there's a big difference between the two and executive producer Brian Grazer reveals the answer.

"I'm not really interested in The Mentalist's process," Grazer told TV Guide. "I mean it might be good — I mean I think it is good, it's doing really well — [but] I'm actually interested in whether people are telling the truth."

Before the CBS procedural The Mentalist went on its holiday hiatus, we saw Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) struggle as he dealt with his professional and personal life. Sure, he had a very remarkable track record for solving serious crimes via his keen observation, but when he encountered a leading scientific researcher killed by poisoning, we realized this wasn't your run-of-the-mill case. True enough, he found out that the primary suspect is the victim's wife and his former psychiatrist.

This special role, Sophie, was played by Law and Order alum Elisabeth Rohm and forced Jane to confront his past. According to some fans, the fact that the role was played by someone as big as Rohm was a give away that, well, she did it.

As The Mentalist heads further into the season, the police drama continues to see bigger and bigger audiences, hitting yet another series high. The pilot episode attracted an audience of 15.6 million in its first airing, and 7.8 million in a re-airing three days later. Since then, the show has earned considerable numbers and in its recent “Flame Red” episode, which aired December 2, it drew 18.77 million viewers, making The Mentalist the highest-rated television show of the week and marking the first time a freshman program had a achieved that distinction since Desperate Housewives four years earlier.

CBS police drama The Mentalist, which stars Golden Globe Award nominee Simon Baker as titular character Patrick Jane, has recently been picked up for an additional six episodes after its initial order of 13. Debuting on September 23, The Mentalist, which follows NCIS, has averaged 15.4 million viewers, an impressive feat for a freshman series. It's somewhat strange that CBS only ordered six more episodes rather than nine, which would give it a full season, but it's hard to imagine CBS won't order more as long as the show continues to pull in those numbers.
