'Swingtown' Star to Appear on Sci-fi Pilot

Previously, we reported that Swingtown, with Bravo recently acquiring rights to air all its13 episodes, held a marathon last October 24, a good month and a half after its season finale last September 5. Swingtown, originally intended as a midseason replacement on CBS about a family who move into an affluent Chicago neighborhood where they confront unexpected pressures from their provocative new neighbors, Tom and Trina Decker.

On Swingtown, Bruce and wife Susan, played by Molly Parker, move their family to a Chicago suburb where they are introduced them to a new sense of “community” that they were not just used to. The couple was thrust into the heat of America's sexual revolution, swingers mostly, where the series got its name.

As reported last month, fans of Swingtown will get a chance to relive the ‘70s once again as the period and relationship drama about the impact of sexual and social liberation in 1970s American suburban households heads to Bravo. At the time of the announcement, the NBC Universal-owned cable network has just acquired the off-network rights to all 13 episodes of the retro series but has not set a premiere date for the cable. Now, fans can mark their calendars!

On Friday, October 24, Bravo will be airing a full series marathon of Swingtown, from 12pm to 1am ET/PT. In a nutshell, Swingtown initially takes place in the summer of 1976 when the Miller family decides to relocate to a more affluent neighborhood in Chicago where they meet temptation in the form of their provocative new neighbors, Tom and Trina Decker. While maintaining their friendship with neighbors from their old neighborhood, they struggle whether to embrace or steer clear of their newfound personal freedom.

Get ready to relive the ‘70s once again as Swingtown hops into bed with a new partner. Bravo, the NBC Universal-owned cable network, has just acquired the off-network rights to all 13 episodes of the retro series, which originally aired on CBS. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal comes as CBS has been “shopping” Swingtown to various cable networks in an attempt to get a sophomore season of the program.

Created by Mike Kelley, whose credits include The O.C., One Tree Hill and Providence, Swingtown is described as a period and relationship drama about the impact of sexual and social liberation in 1970s American suburban households. The series premiered on Thursday , June 5 in a time slot previously occupied by Without A Trace. And after seven episodes of declining ratings, CBS decided to move the show to Fridays, with the first season finale airing on September 5.

The last I really saw Grant Show, he was the dreamy tenant on Darren Star's Melrose Place, which effectively became the adult version of Aaron Spelling's Beverly Hills 90210. It's been a while since he was in anything that actually caught my eye but he's back now to set pulses racing anew on Swingtown. As the name implies, CBS' brand-spanking new series is a throwback to the sights, styles, scenes and sounds of the `70s era that brought us music to swing to and the swinging life choices that went along with that colorful period.

Show and some of the Swingtown folk spoke to The Associated Press about finding the right balance to achieve a complete, authentic yet not over-the-top look and feel of the swinging `70s.

The ‘70s are in full swing tonight as CBS airs the premiere of Swingtown, the controversial drama series created and executive produced by Mike Kelley, whose credits include Jericho, The O.C., One Tree Hill and Providence.

The producers describe the show as "a snapshot of that unique moment in American history when feminism, political liberalism and sexual experimentation began to trickle down to the Middle American suburbs, resulting in the shifting mores that changed our society forever." Judging from the narrative, Swingtown hardly sounds like a CBS series. But then again, this is the network's attempt to compel fans of boundary-pushing basic cable channels like FX and AMC to sit up and take notice of their latest offering.

CBS Plans Two New Dramas for Summer

Those who complain that there's not enough scripted programming during the summer months may want to tune in to CBS beginning in May. The network will be debuting two new shows over the summer, with the first being the long anticipated 1970s drama Swingtown. The series, from Jericho executive producer Carol Barbee, will kick off on Thursday, May 29 at 10pm. The other drama, which is set to air sometime in July, is called Flashpoint. The series stars Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) and revolves around the risk-filled lives of a group of cops who are part of an emergency task force. CBS is hoping that these scripted shows will be able to break out in the midst of the reality plagued summer season.
