'October Road' Alum To Appear on 'How I Met Your Mother'

So far, the fourth season of How I Met Your Mother has given us a lot to laugh about. From Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel) contemplating having a baby, Robin (Cobie Smulders) becoming Ted's (Josh Radnor) roommate to Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) failed attempts to tell Robin he loves her. Soon, however, the show will be returning its focus on Ted's love life when Laura Prepon guest stars as Ted's love interest.

Perhaps best known for her role as Donna Pinciotti, longtime girlfriend of next-door neighbor, Eric Forman on That '70s Show, Laura Prepon has signed on to play Ted's once (and possibly future) girlfriend. Following That '70s Show, which ran from 1998 to 2006, Prepon worked on movie The Chosen One and then returned to the small screen to join the cast of the ABC drama October Road, which was eventually canceled by the network shortly after its debut. No word yet on when she'll be making her debut on the CBS sitcom but it has been confirmed that she'll be appearing in at least five episodes.

While many networks might be in trouble next Fall due to the writers' strike shrinking the new pilot season, ABC is looking quite good. It has a solid stable of returning favorites (Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives), hit reality shows (The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars) and a solid 2007 freshman class that will return for sophomore seasons (Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Samantha Who?). This doesn't leave much room for new or bubble shows, so this season ABC is cleaning out its closet, dumping a lot of iffy shows while picking up a few gems from other networks.

Fans Campaign to Promote and Save 'October Road'

October Road is one of those shows that are in perpetual danger of being canceled on ABC. Nevertheless, the show has captured some devoted fans who are not about to go quietly into the night.

October Road debuted on March 15, 2007 on ABC immediately following Grey's Anatomy with strong ratings but fell a significant 16 percent in its second episode. The series, which centers on Nick Garrett (Bryan Greenberg) as he returns to his hometown a decade upon experiencing writer's block, continued to lose some of its audience especially during the last episode of the pilot season. The show was renewed for a second season, which just ended its 13-episode run last month. As of this moment, the fate of the show remains in limbo.

Two-Hour 'October Road' Season Finale Airs Tonight

Tonight marks this current season's conclusion on October Road, via a special two-hour finale featuring two, back-to-back episodes. Commencing an hour ahead of its usual Monday night time slot, October Road's season-ending double bill kicks off with “The Fine Art of Surfacing” at 9pm, followed immediately by “As Soon as You Are Able” at 10pm.

Laura Prepon has made a name for herself as a television actress, but the 27-year-old star, who currently has a lead role in the ABC drama October Road, is hoping to get some more action behind-the-scenes.

Prepon has actively pursued the art of directing, taking private classes with director Eric Sherman at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She has also directed a short film called Abide with Me, which follows a 10-year-old boy who, upon bearing witness to his father's murder, is rendered mute. His new neighbors befriend him and “help him to live again.”

Last week, the network launched “Meet Me on October Road,” a microsite on ABC.com that gives viewers the opportunity to post anecdotes online. From the network's home page, visitors can access the microsite by clicking on a link, after which a short introduction set against an autumn scene loads on the screen. ABC's October Road enters its fourth week back on the air with a holiday-themed episode called “Deck the Howls.”

Show Execs Share 'October Road' Season 2 Details

Last season, October Road was one of the most critically-denounced shows on television. While show execs Scott Rosenberg, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec were aware that the new series wasn't exactly at par with previous hit dramas, they said they weren't expecting to receive so much criticism.

''I've literally made a many, many s---ty movies in my career, and I've never gotten such hateful reviews,'' Rosenberg told Entertainment Weekly. “There are shows like Who Wants to Marry My Cousin's Wife? that got better reviews than October Road. It's a cozy show about a writer who comes back to his hometown and falls back in love. You would think we were decapitating bunny rabbits.”

Despite the “hateful reviews,” the network decided to renew October Road for another season, which kicked off last Thursday and continues in the shows' regular Monday timeslot starting tonight. In order to breathe new life into the show, the executive producers have not only focused on character development, but also on a guest-star lineup that will help shake things up at Knights Ridge.

New Drew Lachey Dance Show Gets Premiere Date

ABC is shaking things up in a big way. With Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor running shorter seasons than most reality shows, the network needs to fill in those empty time slots by the end of November. Thus, today ABC announced the premiere dates for the second seasons of October Road and Notes from the Underbelly, while also setting a date for Dance War, the Drew Lachey-hosted competition from the producers of Dancing with the Stars.

Dance War will premiere Monday, January 7 at 8pm, occupying the time slot currently held by Dancing with the Stars. After it's final performance show on November 26, the network will fill the hour during December with various holiday specials.
