'Men in Trees' Actress Gets Cast in 'Lie to Me'

Men In Trees has been off the air for some time now. It's a good thing that most of its cast members have managed to stay in the TV circuit as they get cast in other series. James Tupper, best known his role as Jack Slattery on Men In Trees and on-and-off screen love interest of co-star Anne Heche, has signed on to play a love interest for Christina Applegate's character on Samantha Who?, while Cynthia Stevenson (Celia Bachelor) has joined The CW comedy Surviving Suburbia as lead star Bob Saget's wife. Additionally, Men In Trees actress Kelli Williams (Julia) has been tapped to join FOX's new hour-long drama series called Lie to Me.

In case you haven't heard, Bob Saget has a new series on The CW called Surviving Suburbia and Cynthia Stevenson has just been cast to play his wife. After playing Police Chief Celia Bachelor on Men In Trees for the past two seasons, the 46-year-old actress will now try her hand at comedy.

Surviving Suburbia follows Bob Saget, a misanthrope who wants nothing more than to be left a lone in his suburban home. The new series will serve as part of the network's Sunday lineup, all of which will be produced by studio Media Rights Capital, starting in September.

Men In Trees has been off the air for several weeks now ever since ABC altered its schedule to accommodate the return of Women's Murder Club, which moved to Tuesdays while Boston Legal moved to the Wednesday slot that used to be the home of the romantic dramedy starring Anne Heche. Putting the series on hold for third time has left viewers on the edge, not knowing when and how the show will resolve its loose ends. But now, the network has decided to make room for the return of Men In Trees.

Like most of the cast and crew of Men In Trees, lead star Anne Heche is also struggling to find work after ABC decided to cancel the series. And now that the 38-year-old actress is unemployed, she can no longer afford to pay for child support.

"I am continuing to look for work, but I have no offers pending and the impending strike by the Screen Actors Guild reduces my prospects for work even further," Heche wrote in court papers.

Previously on Men In Trees, the residents of Elmo hoped for the best after learning that Jack's life may be in danger. Marin focused her energy on helping Cash through his illness, Patrick asked a young woman out on a date, while Annie found out some surprising news about Jerome's past life. Towards the end, Jack came back and Cash tried to stay out of Marin and Jack's way by telling her that he's miraculously cured.

As we reported last week, Men in Trees, one of the final few left standing with scripts, finally succumbed to the four month-long writers' strike and shut down production. It wrapped up filming its last original content installment on Thursday, cutting short the show's production schedule which normally runs through to April.

It's been close to eight years since Men in Trees star Anne Heche turned her affections towards men after maintaining a relationship with comedian/talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres for two years. At the rate her bitter divorce from cameraman Coleman Laffoon is going, the actress may be wishing she'd remained a lesbian.

Back in May of 2007, we reported that Laffoon had filed court papers in which he questioned the Men in Trees star's psychological capacity as mother to their son, Homer. He had requested for joint legal and primary physical custody of the child, along with monthly child support. Since then, Laffoon has been granted custody of Homer and $15,000 in child allowance.

Men in Trees' John Amos is now a country music artist. Thanks to their show's recent hiatus, a 16-year old boy with the right lineage and a series of uncanny coincidences, Amos now has a five-year record contract with Nashville's Music Row Records.

Suleka Mathew spent the early part of her career trying out for and appearing in drama series, which is why she was delighted when she got the chance to audition for Men in Trees, a comedy-drama about a relationship coach/writer who moves to Alaska in a quest towards self-discovery.

“I was down in Los Angeles auditioning for a couple other shows during pilot season. Earlier in the summer, it was reported that The Practice actress Kelli Williams will appear on the new season of ABC's Men in Trees. Reports have claimed that Williams' character will serve as a love interest for Jack Slattery (James Tupper), but series creator/writer Jenny Bicks has said otherwise.

“Contrary to press reports, the character of Julia, played by Kelli Williams… will NOT be a love interest for Jack. Anne Heche, star of the series Men in Trees, is now vying for the custody of her five-year-old son Homer with estranged husband Coley Laffoon. Earlier this month, Laffoon has filed court papers in which he has questioned Heche’s psychological capability as a mother, and has requested for joint legal and primary physical custody of the child, $33,000 a month in child support and at least $15,000 in attorney fees.

In 2000, Heche dated cameraman Laffoon, whom she met while he was filming a comedy special for Heche’s then girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres. Heche and Laffoon married in September 2001, had a son named Homer in 2002 and filed for divorce in February 2007.

Networks Cause Mass Hysteria with Schedule Changes

I know we ran through this last week, but there have been more changes and a boatload more speculation since then regarding the new prime time schedules for the major networks. Sweeps is a key time for re-tooling schedules, and once all the mid-season replacements are placed, the network's hands are pretty much tied. There's no turning back. In the past few days there have been some mildly surprising announcements (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip receiving a full-season pickup, Men In Trees to air post-Grey's Anatomy) and there are sure to be some more in the coming week, especially when NBC announces their Winter schedule and ABC decides what to do with their new/departing shows scheduling quagmire.
