People's Choice Award Nominees: 'True Blood,' 'Gossip Girl' and the Usual Suspects

This morning the People's Choice Award nominations were revealed, and as always, it's populism at its best. On the TV side, the nominees often look like the top of the Nielsen ratings list, with a few notable and surprising exceptions. Shows like True Blood and Gossip Girl crept into the Favorite TV Actress categories while Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show features Lost, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.

However, those are the very cool exceptions. For the most part, the list is full of CSI, NCIS, Grey's Anatomy, Two and a Half Men and other top-rated shows. Here are the major television nominees for this year's People's Choice Awards.

Naveen Andrews Gets 'Law & Order: SVU' Guest Gig

Naveen Andrews, best known as Ocean 815 survivor Sayid Jarrah on Lost, has signed on for a guest role on the NBC drama Law & Order: SVU.

TVGuide.com reports that he is set to begin shooting in the coming week in New York, although details of his role are being kept under wraps. His episode is set to air in January next year, at around the same time Lost premieres its sixth and final season.

2009 Emmy Awards: Drama Predictions

The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards are this Sunday at 8pm on CBS. Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, it looks like two shows will have a stranglehold on the night: Mad Men for Drama and 30 Rock for Comedy, both coming in with an overwhelming lead in total nominations.

The Creative Arts Emmys were held Saturday night, and some big names one the major awards. The Guest Acting awards are usually the big draw, and this year was no exception. On the Drama side, Ellen Burstyn won for Law and Order: SVU while Michael J. Fox won for his recurring role on Rescue Me.

'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' Veteran To Appear on 'Big Love'

Law & Order: SVU veteran Adam Beach is set to go on board for HBO polygamist drama Big Love's fourth season for a season-long recurring role as Tommy Flute, the son of Bill's (Bill Paxton) partner, the head of the Indian Gaming Casino Jerry Flute (Robert Beltran). Beach, 36, is best known for his roles as Marine Private First Class Ira Hayes in Flags of Our Fathers and Private Ben Yahzee in Windtalkers.

The HBO drama announced previously that it was on a lookout for two additions to its cast, including Barb's (Jeanne Tripplehorn) pre-teen niece and Cindy's (Judith Hoag) daughter and closeted gay Mormon and new Trustee of the Juniper Creek Assets who might also be a love interest for Alby (Matt Ross). Since Beach's role isn't any of these two things, Big Love is still looking for the two new characters.

Big Love was also recently embroiled in a controversy after the University of Utah accused HBO of infringing its copyright when a logo of the university was seen in a document the character of Paxton was holding in the season 3 finale last March.

Law & Order: SVU: Sneak Peek at Wentworth Miller's Guest Appearance (Or Is It?)

It's no secret that Wentworth Miller will be returning to television screens via a guest appearance on Law & Order: SVU's season premiere, which airs on September 23 on NBC. Of course, it'd be weird seeing the guy in a different setting, after four years of getting into prisons, breaking out, and generally running away on Prison Break. Of course, we now know that the former good guy/bad guy (depending on who you are) is playing pretty much a good guy on the SVU season premiere, as an NYPD officer who saves a rape victim.

While NBC isn't really giving that many details on storylines for the show yet, they posted a sneak peek on the season premiere on the show's website. Yep, your first glance at Wentworth after attempting to take down the Company and paying too much for it. The video's right below, and my quick takes as well.

It's been a few weeks since Michael Scofield said his final farewells in the Prison Break series finale, and everyone wondering what Wentworth Miller would do next can rest, for now. Today TV Guide Magazine confirmed that Miller will be guest starring on the season premiere of Law and Order: SVU, an episode that airs Wednesday, September 23 at 9pm on NBC.

NBC Announces Fall Premiere Dates

After 16 years of filming Late Night with Conan O'Brien, tonight the redheaded funnyman begins his new gig as the host of The Tonight Show. He'll be joined by Will Ferrell, musical guest Pearl Jam, and will have former Late Night co-host Andy Richter by his side once more.

In anticipation of his Tonight debut, many of Conan's celebrity friends--including 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin, Apprentice host Donald Trump, and others--offered words of encouragement and advice to O'Brien, who will have all of America watching to see how he makes the gig his own.

As O'Brien recently told the New York Times, "There's an opportunity to put my stamp on this show. I've got an ego, and I want to do my Tonight Show."

After its initial announcement last month about the shows it would pick up, today NBC revealed its official 2009-2010 schedule and also made several official cancellations.

My Name is Earl and Medium are both gone, though there are possibilities that both shows could be picked up by rival networks.?? For My Name is Earl, it's especially difficult since the season ended with a cliffhanger.

'Law & Order: SVU' Star Suffers From Collapsed Lung

Mariska Hargitay, best known for her role as Detective Olivia Benson on Law and Order: SVU, has suffered a collapsed lung, according to a rep for the actress. As of this moment, it is unknown how she endured the collapsed lung, but it may have been a result of a buildup of air in the space between the lung and chest wall. It can also be caused by a chest injury like a puncture wound or a broken rib, but can occur without injury.

“Mariska Hargitay has been sidelined with a pneumothorax [a partially collapsed lung],” her representative Gary Mantoosh told Access Hollywood exclusively.

BuddyTV reader jayddw couldn’t have said it any better last week: “I guess when it hits closer to home, anyone would tend to get overly involved.” And who wouldn’t? It’s one of those times when you feel you can do so much more because you’ve been through it, without realizing that you’re stepping the line, favorably or otherwise. In the case of Law & Order: SVU, not everybody is immune to it. Of course, you can only refer to Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), whose dedication to her work gets in the way more often than not.

After all, she’s got a past. You know it all too well: she was the result of her mother’s rape, an issue which never got closure upon her mother’s death. Later she would experience sexual abuse of her own—remember when she went undercover for a case, only to come very close to be the case herself? That, of course, comes into play whenever she handles cases, especially when it also involves sexual abuse. I know police officers and investigators should keep their distance as much as possible whenever they’re on duty to prevent their judgment from being muddled, but when you’ve come from a background like Olivia’s, it must be a real struggle.

'Law & Order: SVU' Explores Own "Persona"

This week, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit lays off the musicians-as-guest-stars trend, if only for a while. Two weeks ago we saw Jesse McCartney take on the role of a murder suspect, which is a surprise considering the image we’ve had of him, both as a singer and actor, for the longest time. Last week, we saw OutKast’s Big Boi take on the role of a, well, hip hop artist who aids the team with uncovering an animal smuggling ring, and it was an easier thing to believe, if you look at it one way.

Tonight, things are going to be back to how it was ought to be. Not that I’m saying musicians can’t be actors, and vice versa; it’s just a little unusual, really. Tonight’s SVU is entitled “Persona”, and it is a return to roots, of sorts, for the long-running crime series. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) handles a cast of spousal abuse: Mia Lorimer (guest star Clea Duvall, Carnivàle) claims that she was raped in an attempt to hide from her husband Brett (guest star Nathaniel Marston, One Life to Live).

OutKast's Big Boi Gets Wild on Tonight's 'Law & Order: SVU'

Last week, Jesse McCartney took a more serious turn by appearing as an ultra-conservative murder suspect in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It seems that the show has a love affair with musicians: this week, another one of them takes on a guest role on the long-running crime drama. Antwan Andre Patton—better known as Big Boi, better known as one-half of Grammy-winning hip hop duo OutKast—will star as, well, a hip hop artist with some underworld connections.

Tonight's episode, entitled “Wildlife”, centers on the team investigating an animal smuggling ring which gets tangled up in the murder of a young woman. The trail leads them to hip hop star Gots Money (Patton), who admits to working for the smugglers, and agrees to go undercover with Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) to sniff out the perpetrators. Things get complicated, however, when Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) poses as a prostitute to aid Elliot in the operation. Suffice it to say that his marriage will turn for the worse—and him, too. A preview promo aired last week hinted that Elliot will be shot; will he be saved?

Jesse McCartney Takes a Mature Turn on Tonight's 'Law & Order: SVU'

Four years ago, a certain Jesse McCartney introduced himself to audiences as he set out looking for a beautiful soul. And the audiences followed him: his first album, Beautiful Soul, sold over 1.5 million copies after its release. Two years later, his second album, Right Where You Want Me, continued his signature feel-good pop, but was less successful.

Perhaps it was a wake-up call from him, as he has decided to take on a more mature image. He released his R&B-tinged album, Departure, six months ago, which he claims shows his maturity as a singer. Controversy flares up on tonight’s episode of Law & Order: SVU when the team tries to handle an investigation whose rules they’re not familiar with. This could cause problems for both the victims and the suspects, not to mention the detectives. Apparently, the evidence the team recovers only manages to bring up further questions regarding the case.

On “Retro,” Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) seek the help of another colleague to help them deal with a new investigation. A young girl with AIDS pushes the two to bring in Doctor Melinda Warner (Tamara Tunie), whose expertise will help with bringing the perpetrator to the surface.

With Law & Order: SVU’s tenth season well underway, its actors have kept themselves busy with other endeavors. In fact, we recently reported that Richard Belzer, who plays Detective John Munch on the series, recently released a novel titled “I Am Not A Cop!” He recently spoke to the New York Magazine to talk about the novel and his encounter with Hulk Hogan over 20 years ago.

"The inspiration partly comes from when I was filming Homicide years ago and we were doing a scene in an alleyway and a shoplifter ran around the corner into the middle of the set," Belzer says of his inspiration to write the novel. "He dropped the bag and raised his hands and then he recognized me and said, 'Oh s---! It's Munch!' It was the convergence of reality and celebrity. I've always been fascinated by that."

Ellen Burstyn to Appear on 'Law & Order: SVU'

Fans have a lot to look forward to when Law & Order: SVU returns for a 10th season on September 23 on NBC. One of which is the highly anticipated guest appearance of Ellen Burstyn, who, according to TV Guide, will grace the series as Detective Elliot Stabler's (Christopher Meloni) bipolar mother.

Not much has been revealed about Burstyn's storyline on Law & Order: SVU. And although the Oscar-winning actress will only appear in one episode, her visit to the police procedural drama is expected to be “explosive.”
