Friday Night Lights: Previewing Episode 4.04 "A Sort Of Homecoming"

Well, stuff are finally unraveling on Friday Night Lights. The Lions are sort of coming together, the graduates are still grappling with life after high school, and loyalties are being tested--say, Buddy finally giving up on the Panthers because Joe just took over and wrecked things up. And then there's this important lesson that I learned after watching Eric and Tami argue about financial matters: don't ever burn your old clothes if you don't have the means to buy new ones.

Indeed, it's hard getting established in a new place, more so if everybody seems to want you out, or worse, killed. Eric at East Dillon, or Tami at Dillon itself, where she's always been. Or the new players, the tensions brewing between Vince and Luke, the reason why team work hasn't exactly panned out the way it should be, the reason why the Lions still lose. You get the idea.

Looks like it's sooo hard being part of the East Dillon Lions.

I mean, you lose your first game because your coach forfeits? Of course, you'd not show up for practice. But if you're Eric, you had to forfeit--your kids are getting banged up--and now you have to convince them to come back because you still believe in them. Of course, all's well that ends well. I thought Landry going ballistic on him was the end.

Former The Practice star Steve Harris is set to join the show's fourth season as Vernon Merriweather, a former football star who is father to East Dillon newcomer Jess (Jurnee Smollett), according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello.

Friday Night Lights fans, October 28 is the date to remember. That's when the show returns for its fourth season, on DirecTV from 9pm. Lots of stuff happening, of course: graduation for some of the Panthers, a handful of new faces, and Dillon being split into two school districts. And that's the stuff I managed to remember.

E! Online talked to the show's runner, Jason Katims, and got him to reveal a handful of details about the upcoming season. I'll keep them pretty short. Oh, and if you don't want spoilers, don't look!

If Riggins' bound to get himself into trouble, might as well get into a lot of it. Well, provided that the plans of Friday Night Lights' writers push through.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reports that they're planning to take Minka Kelly in for a two-episode appearance in the show's upcoming season. Makes sense, because we need a farewell arc for her, and with her pilot for the CW still floating in space (but pretty much dead), well, she'd need all the jobs she can take. (And no, the title didn't mean it as good news... read on.)

Looks like Tami's losing a friend when Friday Night Lights' fourth season kicks off either in October or next summer. Well, at least it isn't because she had to go or something--it looks very open-ended, even.

Janine Turner, also known as last season's Katie McCoy, is not going to be part of the drama series' upcoming season, but according to executive producer Jason Katims, it's because "so far we don't have her in any stories." Which, at first glance, obviously means there's a big chance she'll return.

TV Guide Magazine's William Keck reports that the folks at Friday Night Lights have cast someone else to play one of the four new characters in the coming season: Madison Burge is set to play Becky, a beauty queen whose life and background will toss some sense of scandal towards Riggins' way.

To be precise, apparently recurring character Becky--raised by a single mom in a working-class family--will be using her charm, humor and looks to get her way, namely complicate both Riggins' life and Tami's. Ahh, the things, 15-year-olds will do...

Make that two new faces when four familiar ones bid farewell to Dillon.

Friday Night Lights have cast Matt Lauria and Michael B. Jordan to play two new characters when the show returns to DirecTV in October, and to NBC in the summer.

And yes, as an aside, it's pretty funny that both actors' names are similar to two other celebrities. Yep, Michael Jordan and... Matt Lauer. He counts, right?

Okay. So the second version of Friday Night Lights--I call it that, yes, because we're essentially changing most of the cast, right? Seniors graduate and go to college. There's a reason why High School Musical isn't going to college, although it's getting a fourth installment, which is, well... anyway. I digress.

I talk about that because, according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, we can expect to see Matt Saracen in the show longer than he is supposed to. Yes, sure, he's also going to college, and he's staying on for the fourth season of the show just to wrap up his storyline and say goodbye like the others. That was supposed to be for five episodes; he's now set to do it for seven.

Here's something we already know: Adrianne Palicki isn't returning to Friday Night Lights full-time, with her being slated for a multi-episode arc this season that is supposed to draw out her farewell. A given, since Minka Kelly and Zach Gilford are also booked for similar farewell arcs as they move past high school and things change for Dillon.

With high school graduation comes departures, and in the case of Friday Night Lights--which got two more seasons in the past months--it means huge departures. And by that, we mean Adrianne Palicki, Minka Kelly and Zach Gilford saying goodbye in the upcoming season. So, the show's going through an infusion of new blood, as it is always, by throwing in four new characters. Cue your cheers. Wheee!

Okay, okay, so maybe we'll have to get used to not having Matt playing for Dillon High, but it's going to be a pretty new set-up anyway, with school districts in the town being split into two, making for what I think could be a cross-town rivalry. San Diego Comic-Con Releases Friday Schedule

First, let's get this out in the open: initial reports said that Supernatural and Smallville will have their panels on Sunday so don't freak out that the shows aren't included in the first two days.

Other than that, Friday's schedule looks amazing. Although my TV favorites aren't on the list, my movie favorites are. There a a couple more timing conflicts and I'm guessing that people are going to have to make some tough choices. When in doubt, stick with Whedon, Rodriguez, Cameron and Jackson.

Friday Night Lights: Taylor Kitsch is 'John Carter'

Talk about a big break for Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch, at least for the movies. After a quick turn as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he is set to take the much-coveted lead role in the upcoming Disney action flick John Carter from Mars.

The film, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs' book series, will be directed by Andrew Stanton. This marks his first live-action feature, after working on two of Pixar's most acclaimed animated releases, Finding Nemo and last year's critical darling WALL-E. This film revolves around a civil war veteran who finds himself transported to Mars all of a sudden--and ends up being involved in a war between races there.

After watching the season finale of Friday Night Lights, there are a million questions buzzing in my head. Is Matt actually leaving for college? Will Lyla and Tim stay together? Will Landry and Tyra stay together? Will Riggin's Rigs be a colossal failure? How will Tim do in college? And the most important question of all: what will it be like to move to East Dillon High?

My heart absolutely broke for Eric (Kyle Chandler) as he struggled to keep his job. My heart broke even more knowing he'd be moved to East High. With the redistricting, all the good football players will be left at Dillon High, meaning Eric won't have much of a team next year. He made the Dillon High Panthers what they are today and to have that all ripped from him is a tragedy.

'Friday Night Lights' Renewed, Despite Low Numbers

Thanks to its loyal fan base and consistently positive critical reception, football-themed drama Friday Night Lights was among the shows NBC picked up for a full-season order recently, despite its less than stellar ratings. The show, alongside The Office, 30 Rock, The Biggest Loser, The Celebrity Apprentice, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, was renewed for a fourth season notwithstanding its average of 4.02 million viewers per episode. On the other hand, Chuck, which had a slightly better than Lights, is still awaiting word in reference to its future.

"We'll never run out of stories to tell," says Connie Britton, who plays coach Eric's wife Tami on the series. "And they're always simple stories. That's why they resonate with people so much."

NBC Unveils Fall Line-up, Six New Shows Ordered, No Word on 'Chuck'

NBC unveiled their slate of programs for the 2009-2010 season this morning. Six new pilots were picked up (two comedies, four dramas). NBC failed to concoct an actual day-by-day schedule for the Fall - they are expected to release that schedule within a couple of weeks. Not mentioned during NBC's announcement this morning were the likes of Chuck, Medium, My Name is Earl, Law & Order and Life. Some of those series could get picked up for mid-season. As of right now, the fall schedule looks filled to the brim, especially when you consider that Jay Leno's new show will be taking up five hours of prime-time per week. For Chuck fans, the wait continues, although the forecast isn't terribly bright. Shows picked up for next season include Parks and Recreation, Southland and Heroes. NBC has also ordered six more episodes of Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday for the Fall.

The Dillon Panthers lost state and it’s six months later. Landry (Jesse Plemons) and Tyra (Adrianne Palicki), Matt (Zach Gilford) and Julie (Aimee Teegarden), and Tim (Taylor Kitsch) and Lyla (Minka Kelly) are all happy as can be. At senior breakfast, Tami (Connie Britton) announces which colleges everyone will be attending and it seems Tyra’s been waitlisted at UT. At the team's last practice, Eric (Kyle Chandler) tells everyone JD was announced High School Quarterback of the Year.

Coach Taylor’s contract is up for discussion at the school board meeting. Paul gives Tami the option to opt out of the discussion but she refuses. Buddy and Eric go to visit an incoming freshman named Shane. Shane’s parents tell them that Wade Aikman and Joe McCoy have already been to see them. In fact, they were under the impression that Wade was the head coach. It seems Wade and Joe have been actively going after the job.

Here we go—Friday Night Lights, the season finale. And you thought we wouldn’t get this far. We know this almost didn’t happen, the end of the third season. Later, we thought this almost happened, the series finale. While the show has had its shares of critical applause, the ratings just didn’t justify keeping this around—until the networks decided to do just that. Thirteen episodes later, we’re seeing a season nicely rounded off, with a guarantee that we’ll see them back for at least two more.

So, last week. It was the state championships, and things almost got wrecked when things among the McCoys got a bit too complicated. And then there’s the Taylors’ decision to intervene, which perhaps wasn’t a good move. Now here’s a line you must toe—either you work for everybody’s benefit, even if it means overstepping the line, or you keep quiet and watch everything self-destruct. You might actually be hoping for the family turmoil to have a good ending—J.D. is, after all, doing very well until this came up—but sometimes others have to get dragged to the situation. And, sadly, that’s what happened to the Taylors.

This Friday is the season finale of the third season of Friday Night Lights. Thankfully, we still have two more season ahead of us to follow the Dillon gang, although it is uncertain who will be returning and who will be seeking a future outside of Dillon, Texas.

NBC Official Press Release: Coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami have faced countless challenges over the course of the last three school years; juggling responsibilities between family, work and pressures from the community, and raising their teenaged daughter, Julie. The past school year brought a wave of change to Dillon, including the arrival of the affluent McCoy family, including Joe and Katie and their freshman son, rising star quarterback J.D. McCoy. The McCoy's befriended all the right people in town -- except for Coach Eric Taylor, who felt challenged and threatened by the power they wielded. Coach Taylor and Tami try to quickly recover from Joe McCoy's premeditated political play, which forced Coach Taylor out as the Panther's head coach. The Taylor's now find themselves adjusting to these changes and open to the new possibilities that lay ahead at rival East Dillon High.
