'Cavemen' Makeup Forces Kroll to Eat "Cylindrical Food"

Being part of ABC's Cavemen has meant long hours on the make-up chair for series star Nick Kroll. However, time is not the only thing that the actor-comedian has had to sacrifice in order to look like an actual caveman, as he claims he has also been forced to eating foods of a certain shape while on the set.

“Because of the makeup I'm very limited to what I can actually consume. So I end up eating literally a lot of cylindrical food,” Kroll told Starpulse.com's Ben Kharakh. “Rolled up turkey slices, I've never eaten more taquitos, or spring rolls, or stuffed grape leaves. Seriously that's like all I can consume on set.”

On November 6, the prehistoric characters of ABC's Cavemen, a comedy born out of a series of GEICO television advertisements, will encounter an alleged impostor in an episode entitled “The Shaver.”

Cavemen, a series that follows a group of friends -- who happen to be cavemen -- living in modern-day San Diego, stars Sam Huntington, Bill English, Nick Kroll, Julie White, Kaitlin Doubleday and Stephanie Lemelin.

'Cavemen' Invades the Big Screen

Screenvision, a movie-screen ad-programming company, announced last week that Insurance company GEICO, which ran television advertisements that inspired the creation of ABC's new comedy, Cavemen, has bought a two-minute ad spot that shows the prehistoric characters singing about their romantic troubles.

According to USA Today, the ad spot, which features the cavemen crooning the Frank Sinatra song “Everything Happens to Me” to a group of women in a high-rise apartment, is being shown in 4,062 screens in 341 theaters across the country. At the end of the video, moviegoers are urged to visit GEICO website CavemansCrib.com.

Tuesday Night Ratings Analysis - 10/9/07

Cavemen, born of insurance commercials, plummeted in the ratings last night, down about 20 percent from its series debut last week. Cavemen's numbers last week were promising, but I, like many others, were suspicious that the ratings would be inflated for that first episode simply out of curiosity. Everyone I knew was at least a little curious how Cavemen turned out, how ABC turned an ad campaign whose star was make-up into a half-hour comedy/satire on racism. It's a crazy experiment by ABC and, to be fair, the reaction was mixed. No one appeared to love Cavemen, but a significant amount of viewers liked it. I think the most common reaction to Cavemen was that it wasn't a total disaster. This may be reflected in the week to week ratings.

Despite poor critical reception, ABC's new comedy series, Cavemen earned solid numbers with its October 2 series premiere. The show may have only drawn 9.2 million viewers, but it won its 8pm timeslot among men between the ages of 18 to 49, as well as men 18 to 34.

ABC noted that Cavemen attracted the network's largest number of 18 to 34-year-old male viewers in the timeslot in almost two years.

Cavemen was going to be a critical target from the get go. It's not often that TV shows are adapted from insurance commercials, and Cavemen did exactly that. The fact that ABC would green light a half hour comedy about Cavemen simply because the characters were involved in mildly popular television commercials is a hugely bizarre decision. Nonetheless, it's only fair to judge Cavemen on its own merits, as if the commercials had never existed. And, frankly, they have nothing to do with ABC's comedy. The actors are different and the show is focused on the silliness of racism. That's right, a show featuring actors in Neanderthal make-up has a social agenda.

Cavemen, a comedy series born out of string of Geico commercials, has received poor reviews from numerous television critics, and the unfortunate thing is, the show has yet to begin airing. Nevertheless, executive producer Will Speck, who was involved with the popular ad spots, still believes the show holds much promise.

“When we were making the commercials, we just felt like there were more stories to tell,” Speck told Contra Costa Times. “And I think it starts in the purest place, which is us feeling like there's love and affection for these characters from us. And I think, if we do our jobs right, people will follow suit.”

Bill English started his acting career playing the Artful Dodger in his 4th grade production of “Oliver!" Since then, he has acted in the Broadway play "Twentieth Century," starring Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche and directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie. Bill has also appeared in several Off-Broadway and regional theater productions as well as starring in the indie film, “The Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell.”

Currently, Bill is appearing in the new ABC comedy Cavemen, as the sophisticated and articulate man who also happens to be a caveman. Bill spoke to BuddyTV about getting the part on his new show, his daily makeup regimen, and his acting career so far. Beauty and the Beast: Cavemen

In BuddyTV’s 2007 Fall TV Guide, we stared at countless photographs of the new show casts to determine which were most pleasing to the eye (the “Beauties”) and which weren’t so pleasant (the “Beasts”). In the end, we settle on Private Practice, Cane and Gossip Girl as having the hottest casts, while Cavemen, Dirty Sexy Money and Back to You all came up short in the looks department.

I wouldn't call myself a picky girl. I've dated lots of different kinds of men over the years with very different styles. I've dated the preppy guy who shopped at Eddie Bauer and Banana Republic. I've let the businessman take me out in his three-piece suits. I've had boyfriends who are clean-shaven, had a full beard, and some with a 5 o'clock shadow. I even once spent time with a guy who wore pants so low, I should have bought him stock in a suspenders company. I'm not sure what I was thinking. It was college. However, I draw the line of interest in the opposite sex at cavemen.

In BuddyTV's 2007 Fall TV Guide, we assessed each night to see which shows the major networks were pitting against each other, and determined which ones would emerge victorious in the ratings war.

Tuesday night has always been girl-power night for me, what with the kick-ass Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and, the most recent addition, Veronica Mars. This year marks the first time in almost a decade that the Tuesday night lineup is not dominated by sassy young women, and it'll be interesting to see who will come out on top.

'Cavemen' Revamps its Cast

Many upcoming shows have been revamping their cast members for some fine-tuning before going on air. Just like ABC’s Private Practice and CBS’ Moonlight, the upcoming sitcom Cavemen has made some changes in its principle ensemble. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Huntington has been added to the show.

Sam Huntington, a 25-year-old actor, is known for his role as Jimmy Olsen in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. His other credits include Detroit Rock City, Not Another Teen Movie, and Rolling Kansas.

A new series will invade ABC’s fall lineup and it comes in the form of Cavemen. Based on the GEICO Cavemen advertisements for the American auto insurance company GEICO, the said pilot follows three cavemen trying to live normal lives in Atlanta, Georgia while struggling with discrimination in the modern world.

Cavemen features Joel, his younger brother Jaime and his best friend Nick as three cavemen living in modern-day Atlanta. Throughout the series, the cavemen endure the present-day society as they struggle to overcome their physical appearance and stereotypes.
