'Monk' Actor to Appear at Educational Conference

While some celebrities like to get their names on tabloids for all the wrong reasons, a number of others are exerting their time and efforts towards meaningful causes such as charity fund-raisers and awareness events. Such is the case for Hector Elizondo, who plays Dr. Neven Bell in the hit USA series, Monk. In fact, the 71-year-old Emmy-award winning actor will join California’s second lady, Patricia Garamendi will be headlining an event called the 3rd National Concepts in Care Conference sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. The event will take place in San Francisco on September 18.

Elizondo, who also recently appeared in the series Cane as Pancho Duque, will be speaking to audiences about his experiences caring for his mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a fact he shares with Garamendi.

'Monk' Returns with a New Therapist for Season 7

On the heels of the death of Stanley Kamel, who played the cranky yet incredibly patient shrink Dr. Charles Kroger on Monk, the Emmy Award-winning police procedural dramedy will be enlisting a new therapist for Tony Shalhoub's obsessive compulsive character.

Joining Monk for season 7, which kicks off on July 18, is none other than Emmy-winning and Golden Globe-nominated Hector Elizondo. The 71-year-old actor has participated in over 80 movies, including Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, where he played the head of the queen's security service and eventual love interest to Julie Andrews's character. On TV, he is credited for his roles as Dr. Phillip Watters on Chicago Hope, and most recently as Pancho Duque on Cane.

Previously on Cane, Joe Samuels (Ken Howard) arranges for a special wedding gift for the Vegas and we see their sugar fields on fire. Alex (Jimmy Smits) confronts him and as he points his gun at him, Joe Samuels is shot.

This week, Cane picks up from that point with Joe Samuels going down and Alex swinging around trying to find the shooter and calling 911. Joe and Alex exchange ugly words as Joe dies.

This episode of Cane begins with a Hurricane Warning and Alex and Artie preparing. Pancho and Amalia are on vacation in New York and keep calling to check on things. Isabel is at the gallery with Hudson, the artist.

Alex and Artie are going to the supermarket to buy supplies, when Alex gets a call from the alarm company. A tree branch broke a window at the Duque homestead and Alex needs to take care of it. He calls Santo to pick Artie up and take him home.

Exec Says Cane is a "Diversion," Not Representative of Latinos

While CBS' Cane revolves around a Cuban-American family, executive producer Jonathan Prince admits that the series is not necessarily representative of the Latino community, nor does it always feature characters that can be considered as role models.

"This is television," Prince told the Deseret Morning News. "It's a diversion. This is intended to entertain [and] provoke. I think if we have a discussion that says, 'What's the responsibility of doing a show about a Latino cast and letting them be murderers and letting them be people who are angry at each other and letting them betray their families,' I don't know."

Previously on Cane, Jaime and Rebecca elope, artist Hudson Brandt is interested in Isabel, and the Duque rum trucks are held up and the drivers executed. Pancho gets fed up with Alex's way of doing things and tells him to take a vacation.

This episode begins with Ramon's nephew Chico and his pal Petey getting held up in an alley after coming out of a club. Chico recognizes one of the hold up men and is injured in a shoot out.

This episode of Cane is all about Alex's distractions. Duque Rum, and his family relationships, suffer as Alex has to deal with the fallout from his prior decisions.

We're starting this episode in the Vega bedroom. Alex is feeling frisky and he makes the move on his wife. At first she looks and acts interested, but then ... Later as she's getting ready for an evening for her fund raiser, she looks to get reassurance from Alex that he'll be there and he promises that he'll show up later. He has to go to a fund raiser for Sen. Finch still trying to get that ethanol bill passed.

This episode of Cane opens with Frank gambling at some kind of dice game. He's not being very lucky this day and he's not a very good loser. When he accuses his opponent of cheating, a knife is pulled on him and he's thrown out. When he leaves, he sees a bookie by his car waiting for him. The bookie takes his car and car keys and tells him that he'd better pay up.

Meanwhile Henry is poolside at this hotel setting up and planning a pool party that Duque is a big sponsor of. And Alex is at a meeting concerning distribution problems at Duque Rum. It is suggested to him that their trucking company, Di Silvia Trucking, is stealing from them.

After the recaps, this week's episode of Cane begins at a Duque family dinner. Henry explains his injuries by telling the family that he was in a car accident. He tells the family that the New Duque Rum Girl is going to be named at the club and that Alicia Keys will be performing.

During dinner, the family airs its' disagreements on Alex's handling of the ethanol situation. Pancho takes him aside to tell him of his dismay and to tell him that he needs to drop the ethanol thing and concentrate on rum. He tells Alex not to make him spend his last days wondering if he made a mistake putting Alex in charge ... ouch.

Smits Says He's Not the Star of 'Cane'

Many consider Jimmy Smits as the star of CBS' drama series, Cane, but the 52-year-old actor begs to disagree.

“I don't think myself as the lead in any way,” Smits told the Boston Herald. “I've always functioned best artistically when it's an ensemble thing that happens. I'm not walking in there with my 8-by-10 photo saying this show is about this guy.”

Cane opens darkly this week. We see flashes of Henry in the hospital, having been badly beaten. Interspersed with those scenes, Santo takes Alex to Little Havana against his better judgment. He uses his gang tattoos for entrance into a club and introduces Alex to a guy who may be a hitman of sorts.

Twenty-four hours earlier, the Duque's are hosting a big party celebrating the International Rum Awards, which they usually win. All of the big rum producers are there with their premium rums for tasting and judging.

Will.i.am to Guest Star on 'Cane' Next Week

Nowadays, Cane has been getting a bunch of music stars to grace the show for added appeal and for enhancing the mood and the storylines as well. As reported previously, Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls has already guest starred on the series and Alicia Keys has also signed on to appear on one of the episodes. Next week, another notable musical artist will be gracing the show and he comes in the form of William Adams, also known as Will.i.am.

Adams is expected to appear on the sixth episode of the season entitled “A New Legacy,” which airs on Tuesday, October 30.

This week's episode of Cane begins with brothers Alex (Jimmy Smits) and Frank (Nestor Carbonell) discussing the ethanol project. They are being spied upon as we see the scene interspersed with what looks to be a camera recording or something with the green tinge of night vision glasses. Vince Grasso (Jason Beghe) interrupts and once Frank leaves, Vince returns Alex's gun. He tells him that it is clean, but that the blood sample found on the body match the sample taken from the Samuels field where Miguel told them the body would be. Vince tells him that a Detective Hodges would be by to talk to him about the case.

Alicia Keys to Guest Star on 'Cane'

After the appearance of Kristin Cavallari (Laguna Beach) and Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls, fans of Cane can expect to see yet another celebrity to guest star on the drama series. R&B and soul singer Alicia Keys is also set to grace the CBS show created by Cynthia Cidre.

Keys, who has sold over 20 million albums worldwide and has won numerous awards, including nine Grammys, 11 Billboard Music Awards and three American Music Awards, will be playing herself in the upcoming episode of Cane but will be doing some flirting with Henry Duque, who is portrayed by Eddie Matos.

Remember the ticked off look on Isabel's face last week when she found that gun in the safe? Well, she stewed about it all night and confronted him when he woke up in the morning. He came up with some bs excuse for having it, but I'm not sure she bought it. They are having some serious trust issues lately and he's not helping.

At the Samuels', their hired PI reports on his surveillance of Alex. They aren't happy that he has no dirt on Alex nor has he found any connection to the Quinones murder. They tell him that he'd better make some luck in finding some information.

Much has been said about Cane's disappointing debut last month that prompted viewers to steer clear of the epic drama that chronicles the external rivalry and internal power struggles of a large Cuban-American family running a massively flourishing rum and sugar business in South Florida. Although some remain faithful to the series, the numbers prove that Cane continues to decline in terms of ratings, given that it already lost 2 million viewers by the time it aired its second episode.

While many consider Cane as a night-time soap opera throwback to the 1980s with a high possibility of getting cancelled, there are also others who regard the CBS television series as an appealing plot-driven, multi-generational melodrama that taps on jealousy, love, fortune, deception and murder. Among those supporters are Hispanic households, comprised of both English and non-English speaking viewers.

After the recap of the Quinonez murder and fallout, this week Cane starts with Alex (Jimmy Smits) finding Santo (Oscar Torres) and offering him a job as his driver. Santo asks if he has to wear a suit, but Alex tells him just wear a clean shirt, shave and he must carry a gun.

Then in a gratuitous sex scene in the club, Henry's (Eddie Matos) sex partner is telling him between acts that it will cost $500,000 to complete the addition he wants. Meanwhile the Samuels private detective informs them that now Miguel is missing.

Smits Enjoys Playing Morally Conflicted Character on 'Cane'

Jimmy Smits' character on CBS' Cane is a far cry from his previous starring roles, which include Detective Bobby Simone on NYPD Blue and young pro-bono lawyer Victor Sifuentes on L.A. Law. Now, he plays a morally conflicted businessman named Alex Vega, but this doesn't bother Smits, as he appreciates the emotional complexity of his character.

"I thought Alex would be someone interesting to inhabit for a long period of time if I had the opportunity," the 52-year-old actor told the Toronto Globe and Mail. "The family is very affluent in South Florida. Alex is the adopted son, who because of a health crisis the patriarch figure [Hector Elizondo] is going through gets thrust into the forefront of this family. He is a very good son in the sense he has a strong moral compass and a sense of family and duty. But he gets himself into a lot of trouble too."

After the recap, Cane opens with Stevie Wonder singing “Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing”. Irony? This episode has Alex Vega worrying 'bout lots of things like his pregnant wife, his son that just enlisted in the military, his new job, the Samuels and the murder he had committed last week.

In the morning, Alex is congratulated at the Duque plant by the workers, Pancho and Frank. Frank finally congratulates Alex and pretends that things are okay between them. While there, Alex is confronted by Miguel, Santos' friend, who attempts to extort more money from him. Alex threatens Miguel in return and later goes to Santos asking him about this problem. Santos reassures Alex that he, Santos, is not going to be a problem.

'Cane' Stirs Up Concerns from Florida Family, Debuts to Unimpressive Numbers

CBS' new drama, Cane, just debuted Tuesday night to less than stellar numbers, but before the series even took off, there was already much controversy surrounding its storyline and premise. The feathers of an influential Cuban-American family were ruffled when CBS announced in May that Cane would be part of their fall TV lineup.

The prominent Fanjul clan from Palm Beach was displeased with the show's imminent airing, claiming Cane's central characters were loosely based on them. Although show creator, Cynthia Cidre, doesn't know why there was even an uproar, CBS has since agreed to change the series setting from Palm Beach to the fictional Florida town of Playa Azul.

Cane: Episode 1.1 "Pilot" Recap

Cane looks to be this generation's Dynasty with a Latin flair. Beautiful people, gorgeous scenes, great music and lots of drama are all featured in the pilot episode. In the first scene we're educated a bit on the Cuban tradition of the cultivation of sugar cane and we learn that the Duque family is known for their rum.

The Duque family is led by Pancho (Hector Elizondo) and his wife Amalia (Rita Moreno). Their three natural children are Frank (Nestor Carbonell), Isabel Vega (Paola Turbay), and Henry (Eddie Matos), and a foster son, Alex Vega (Jimmy Smits). Alex is also Pancho's son in law. In this episode, Pancho is told that he has only 6 months to a year to live.

CBS Rolls Out Landmark Publicity Push for Neophyte 'Cane'

With CBS’ new mob cartel-inspired Cane set to debut on September 25, the network has fashioned an innovative marketing campaign to drum up publicity for the new program. CBS has collaborated with iconic magazine, Rolling Stone, to carry a specially designed print ad for a make-believe product named after one of the families on the show.

The advertisement, which was appeared on Rolling Stone’s September 7 issue, showcases the fake Duque Rum, complete with a flavor strip of something akin to a rum-based Mojito. As a further push to both the imaginary rum brand and the upcoming Cane, CBS also developed a web site dedicated to the search for the signature Duque Rum Girl. Both the print campaign and the web contest are scheduled to be incorporated into the show. Cane characters will actively peruse the Duque brand marketing strategy, while the eventual Duque Rum Girl will make an appearance in an episode late into the season.

Beauty and the Beast: Cane

In BuddyTV’s 2007 Fall TV Guide, we stared at countless photographs of the new show casts to determine which were most pleasing to the eye (the “Beauties”) and which weren’t so pleasant (the “Beasts”). In the end, we settle on Private Practice, Cane and Gossip Girl as having the hottest casts, while Cavemen, Dirty Sexy Money and Back to You all came up short in the looks department.

CBS' new Tuesday night drama, Cane, is one of my picks as most promising new fall show, and it doesn't hurt that the cast is also ridiculously good-looking. The drama revolves around the powerful Duque family, who made their fortune in sugar and rum. The family's future may not be entirely certain, as their arch-rivals, the Samuels family, are doing their best to take over the Duques' fortune, but one thing is certain: all three generations of Duques are smokin' hot.
