'Bionic Woman' in Limbo, Sackhoff Staying Put and Ryan Dating Wilson?

As rumors swirl that Michelle Ryan may be the latest apple of Owen Wilson's eye, her freshman show Bionic Woman remains in limbo thanks to plummeting ratings and the ongoing writers' strike. Despite its uncertain future however, one of the show's mainstays claims she is prepared to stick it out in case the series does manage to hang on for dear life.

Unless the writers' guild walkout is resolved soon, chances are dim that Bionic Woman will carry on. The show was among the earliest to shut down work after the strike commenced five weeks ago.

The edgier, if not darker, remake of Bionic Woman may wind up yet another casualty of the ongoing writers' strike. If the standoff between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers isn't resolved expeditiously, there may not be enough material to take the freshman series past January 2008.

According to industry personnel, between five to six American television shows are likely to be out of written scripts in the next couple of months.

There may be romance in the offing for the modernized Jaime Sommers, aka, the Bionic Woman. This, according to the young woman herself, who essays the role of the mechanically enhanced bartender on today's remake of the `70s cult classic.

Michelle Ryan, who plays the new Sommers on the Bionic Woman, told The National Ledger that her onscreen persona may soon get the chance to see a different, more pleasant kind of action than her usual fare of battling unscrupulous forces.

Today's version of Bionic Woman, as much as the original series back in the `70s, relies quite heavily on the impact of its lead actress. In the first Bionic Woman, the series actually came about as a result of audience response to Lindsay Wagner's portrayal of Jamie Sommers in a handful of episodes of its parent show, The Six Million Dollar Man.

In the modern retelling of the series, Michelle Ryan has taken the cudgels from Wagner, playing Jaime Sommers as a mechanically enhanced bartender. Aside from Ryan, another strong female presence on the show is Katee Sackhoff, best known as daredevil starship captain, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on a remake of another `70s classic, Battlestar Galactica.

Entertainment Weekly does lists all the time, and one of their latest is entitled “22 Butt-Kicking Babes”. The list counts down, in order, the top 22 bad ass women of all-time in film and television. The point of these lists is to incite discussion, which I understand, but I think that any TV fan is going to have some major qualms with some of the women put on the list and some who were left off. Chuck's Yvonne Strahovski just barely made the list, pulling in at number 22 for her portrayal of CIA agent Sarah Walker. Michelle Ryan hit up the list at number 15 as NBC's new Bionic Woman. Shouldn't those two be given, I don't know, a full season before we anoint them two of the most “butt-kicking” women of all-time? Aren't they jumping the gun a little bit?

NBC Orders Three More Scripts for 'Chuck' and 'Bionic Woman'

NBC announced some good news for its quad of new dramas today, ordering three more scripts each for Chuck, Bionic Woman, Journeyman and Life. While this is certainly great news for each of these series, it does not necessarily mean each show will be picked up for the full season. It is, however, typically seen as a precursor to a full-season order. Chuck and Bionic Woman are not big surprises here: both have received solid ratings, especially in the key demos. Journeyman and Life getting re-upped is a bit of a shock, considering the declining ratings both dramas have received. But, if NBC has proved anything over the last few years, it's that if they are confident in a show's creative direction, they will practice extreme patience. FOX, NBC is not. In related news, CBS ordered four additional episodes of the Jimmy Smits-led drama Cane. Also, the CW commissioned three more scripts for their semi-controversial comedy Aliens in America.

Bionic Woman's pilot was a landmark for NBC's opening week, but will the second episode live up? The second episode opens with Jamie (Michelle Ryan) at Will's funeral. There seems to be continuity flaw after continuity flaw here. Didn't Jamie give a speech on doing "this, whatever this is," but on her terms? When she runs into Jonas she has either had a change of heart, or the writers forgot that minor detail.

The hype surrounding NBC's re-imagined series, Bionic Woman, has done well for the show, as its premiere beat tough competition in the forms of Private Practice, Criminal Minds, Kitchen Nightmares and Gossip Girl.

Bionic Woman earned a 5.5 rating among adults 18-49, beating the premiere of the new ABC medical drama, which earned a 5.1. So far, Bionic Woman is the highest-rated new series to debut this fall, and the highest-rated Wednesday-night series premiere for the Peacock since The West Wing debuted in 1999. Additionally, the NBC series won the 9-10pm timeslot despite having a weaker lead-in than Private Practice.

NBC is doing everything in its power to give TV viewers a chance to see the networks new shows prior to the beginning of the Fall televisions season. Starting today, DVDs of Chuck, Journeyman, and Life will be available for free rental at Blockbuster stores across the country. All the shows come on one special DVD created by NBC that also includes a two-minute sneak preview of Bionic Woman. The DVD will be available at Blockbuster through October 21. Subscribers of Blockbuster Total Access can add the Fall Preview DVD to their queue and receive it in the mail. Starting September 10, anyone with Comcast, Charter, Time Warner of DirecTV On Demand will be able to access the pilots of Chuck, Bionic Woman, Journeyman, and Life for free. In addition, anyone with an internet connection will be able to access free pilot episodes of the same NBC shows for on Amazon.com's Unbox service. With internet rumor mongers so obsessed with debating the merits of casting Isaiah Washington on Bionic Woman, the news that Michelle Ryan's on-screen sister has both been recast and completely re-written has slipped by practically unnoticed. The TV Dailies, a syndicated service that gauges pre-premiere metrics through online polling, reports that NBC's Bionic Woman is among the highest-rated new network TV shows on this fall's primetime programming with regards to viewer buzz, awareness and intent to watch. TV Dailies, a division of Online Testing eXchange (OTX), polled 3,100 people ages 13-64 early this month.

The NBC re-imagined series topped awareness among potential TV viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, followed by ABC's Cavemen. Viewer buzz went to the ABC comedy series, pushing Bionic Woman into second place.

Today is Isaiah Washington's Birthday, and all the 43-year-old actor wants for a present is for us to believe his latest ‘tell all' moment. This time, it's an attempt to wriggle free of intent to breach contract accusations being slung at the actor and NBC Co-Chair Ben Silverman by ABC's Stephen McPherson.

When McPherson responded to Silverman's statements that he was interested in Washington before the actor was let go, the ABC exec accused Silverman of committing what would amount to luring the embattled actor into a willful breach of contract. Now, freshly cemented into his new role on Bionic Woman, Washington is in an all too familiar position: damage control.

2007 Comicon: 'Bionic Woman' Pilot Screening and Panel

The pilot for the new NBC version of Bionic Woman screened in front of a few thousand people this morning at San Diego Comicon, and the verdict is still out. The show has potential, obviously, but the execution in the pilot leaves a lot to be desired. The crowd gave the pilot raucous applause upon its ending, but I think that was politeness more than anything. It was certainly a disappointment to me, and I have to imagine that the critical response will be lukewarm at best.

That's not to say that Bionic Woman can't turn it all around. David Eick has steered Battlestar Galactica in the right direction, and if anyone can turn around a Bionic Woman it's him. The version we saw was not a full one, nor will it be the same come premiere time. They completely recast the sister of Jaimie Summers, who in our version was deaf and in the upcoming real version, uh, won't be deaf. That said, the pilot we saw was clunky, the characters were underdeveloped, motivations were unclear, the action was unmemorable, and the dislogue was mediocre. Other than that, it was alright.

Katee Sackhoff Officially 'Bionic' After Negotiation Drama

NBC has been prominently featuring Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck) as a recurring character in many of their Bionic Woman promos, but secretly a dramatic negotiation has been going on behind the scenes that almost saw Sackhoff walking away from the David Eick helmed remake.

Sackhoff has a pivotal role in the Bionic Woman pilot as Sarah, Jamie Sommers' (Michelle Ryan) bionic sensei, and later bionic nemesis. Sackhoff's intensity and wit were well received in clips distributed to the electronic press, and NBC seized on Sackhoff's well crafted villainess in promoting the show.
