CBS is teaming up with Vaseline to sponsor "Breakthrough Performance of
the Year," a category which allows viewers to vote for their favorite
TV moments of the year, with the top three and winner being revealed on
the primetime Emmy Awards telecast Sunday, September 20 on CBS.

The number of things that are unbelievably stupid and wrong with this
decision is astounding. Even if you don't like the Emmys, you have to
admit that this decision is actively killing what little credibility
the Emmys hoped to maintain.
morning's Emmy nominations, announced at 8:35am ET by Grey';s Anatomy's
Chandra Wilson and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons.

This year there are plenty of interesting changes and storylines going
into the announcement. As always, Grey's Anatomy has plenty of drama,
with Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight's behind-the-scenes decisions and
Patrick Dempsey's choice to submit himself as a supporting actor for
the first time. Expanding the major acting and series categories to
six nominees each should also add some extra spice into the morning.
The Emmys Report: Drama Lead Actor and Actress Races

A lot is made of the overwhelming number of great leading roles for
women on cable, but if the official Emmy ballots are any indication,
women are still a minority when it comes to starring TV roles. On the
official ballot sent to Emmy voters, there are 70 contenders for
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, but only 48 for the Lead
Actress category.

But the numbers don't help the major networks. Despite the fact that
more than 60 percent of the potential nominees come from the five major
networks, it's the cable guys and gals who take the lead at the Emmys.

See More:
Drama Series Predictions>>

The Emmys Report: The Drama Series Race

The ballots
are out, the race is on, and soon we will know which lucky shows and
actors will be nominated for this year's Emmy Awards. This year the
main categories have been expanded to six nominees due to the
increasing volume of shows produced. The official Emmy ballot for
Outstanding Drama Series lists 76 eligible shows, but that includes
everything from last year's winner, Mad Men, to "no chance in Hell:
submissions like The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

So
who is actually in the hunt? Last year proved that cable networks have
finally broken through as it was the first time a cable network other
than HBO scored a nomination in this category.

The Emmys Report: McDreamy and 'Big Love' Ladies Change Categories

The end of May means it's time to start campaigning for the Emmy Awards. Many shows have already started hitting voters with giant For Your Consideration DVD sets to get the coveted nominations. This season, however, there's a lot of gamesmanship going on for category placements as actors are moving from Lead to Supporting or vice versa in order to improve their chances at a nomination.

The biggest change is coming from Grey's Anatomy, where McDreamy himself Patrick Dempsey is dropping down to the Supporting Actor race after failing to get nominated as a Lead Actor for four years. While some might criticize the move as blatantly mislabeling himself in order to score a nomination, it's actually a bigger indictment on the show itself.
John vs. Oscar: 2008 Emmys Wrap-Up Podcast

BuddyTV writers John Kubicek and Oscar Dahl discuss the 2008 Emmys.

Ah...sweet, undeserved victory. The 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on ABC last night, and I destroyed my colleague John Kubicek in our Emmy prediction competition. Perhaps “destroyed” isn't the right word, considering I only beat him by one category, but the victory is there nonetheless. Kubicek purports himself to be something of an awards' show savant, a master predictor, though he didn't really show it last night. This morning, Kubicek and I decided to sit down and discuss the events of the previous night. How did our Emmy predictions go, what were our biggest surprises, what were the hits, what were the misses, are among the topics discussed below.
Below you will find a complete list of all the winners from tonight's ceremony. The Drama side was dominated by first-year shows like Mad Men and Damages, each picking up two Emmys. Comedy was ruled by 30 Rock, winning four Emmys, including ones for Series and its two leads, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. The night also had quite a few surprises early on, like Jean Smart for Samantha Who?, Diane Wiest for In Treatment and Zeljko Ivanek winning for Damages, as well as Bryan Cranston winning for Breaking Bad.

In other categories, HBO dominated with its TV movie Recount and miniseries John Adams, The Colbert Report won its first-ever Emmy, and Jeff Probst took home the inaugural Emmy for Reality Host.

OK, maybe not, but the actors who play those two characters on How I Met Your Mother have been tapped to host the Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards. Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Chalke (best know for her work on Scrubs) will co-host the ceremonies, which will take place on September 13 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The event will air a week later, September 20, on the E! Yes, The Wire's lack of nominations is a damn shame, but we knew it was going to happen. It's not a happy show, it requires a five-season commitment to appreciate and no one watched it. So, while most snub talk has focused on the scripted shows, I'd like to shift focus to the reality categories. In my mind there were two major snubs; one unsurprising and frustrating, the other surprising, yet just. Phil Keoghan was left off the list for Best Reality Host, and Survivor was absent from Best Reality Series – Competition.

2008 Emmy Nominations: Cable Dominates, 'Lost' In, 'Grey's' Out

This morning the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 60th Annual Emmy Awards.

On the Drama side, the big story is the dominance of cable, picking up the majority of the acting and series nominees with shows from TNT, FX, AMC, Showtime and HBO. Equally surprising is the absence of Grey's Anatomy in the Drama Series race, while Lost makes its triumphant return. For comedies, many old favorites are back with all five nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series having been nominated before. However, several new actors from Pushing Daisies and Samantha Who? were able to make it in. And if you're a fan of smaller categories, Amy Poehler makes a shocking appearance in the Comedy Supporting Actress race for Saturday Night Live while "I'm F***ing Matt Damon" is up for Best Original Song.
Yet, there it is again, perched atop the comedy world, a nominee for Best Comedy Series, while more worthy candidates like How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Pushing Daisies, South Park, Flight of the Conchords and My Name is Earl sit on the sidelines. It's frustrating; ask any fan of television comedy whether Two and a Half Men is one of the five funniest shows this country has to offer and you'll be met with a resounding “Hell No!”

2008 Emmy Nominations: Additional Nominee List

Sometimes the smaller categories at the Emmy Awards are just as interesting as the major nominees. This year, 30 Rock absolutely dominates the guest acting categories, picking up an astonishing seven nominations for those two categories. Additionally, The Wire picks up its second Emmy nomination in the same category as the first in what I think is the strongest category: Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series. It competes with Mad Men, Damages and Battlestar Galactica.

Other nominees of interest include the domination of John Adams and Recount in the Miniseries and TV Movie categories (plus the welcome addition of the Extras finale), the fact that Tina Fey was nominated for hosting Saturday Night Live and the Original Song and Lyrics category, which pitd light of the Conchords against Sarah Silverman, who was "f***ing Matt Damon."
