Doris Roberts was born Doris May Metzler on November 4, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri and is a veteran of stage, theater and television. On Broadway, she starred in The Death of Bessie Smith, Marathon `33, The Desk Set, Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Bad Habits, for which she won the Outer Critics Circle Award. Her film credits include The Rose, The Heartbreak Kid, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and My Giant. On television, she has won five Emmys as Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role – four for her well-loved character, Marie Barone, on Everybody Loves Raymond, and one for a guest appearance on the medical drama, St. Elsewhere.
Marie Barone, played by Doris Roberts on Everybody Loves Raymond, is the intrusive, meddlesome, somewhat insulting wife to Frank Barone and mother to Robert and Raymond. Marie is a superb cook, homemaker, housewife and mother, albeit, sometimes, to a fault. In a bizarre and inexplicable twist, she has a completely unbalanced sense of motherhood towards her two sons. While totally devoted, over-nurturing and obsessive towards Raymond, she is equally uninterested, unmindful and neglectful of Robert. She is especially critical of Debra, Raymond’s wife, and constantly criticizes her cooking and household skills. Marie is also fond of exaggerating and making matters worse by blowing things way out of proportion.
