Jim Died early in last season and jumped into a dead body named sam, at which time he did not have any memory that he was jim and was married to melinda. He regained his memory while he was trying to resure melinda. He does not go by jim anymore but sam and the reason it is showing jims face and body as it is only shown to viewers but when he looks in the mirror it will show sams face not jims.

ok, so if melinda got pregnant before jim was killed how is it that Aiden is like 5 years old already?

They showed it in the episode when Aiden was born. Kinda like age progression...the caption showed "5 years later." I guess they just wanted to skip right into Aiden's budding abilities.

Jim's character as Sam is what is called in "walk-in" phenomena. The soul who originally inhabited the body leaves it for whatever reason and another soul takes it over. The confusion that is portrayed by Jim is that his body has memories of its former inhabitant and, of course, has no recollection of anybody from its old life, but as was played out, the walk in soul eventually has to come to terms with its new lease on life.
