I think, Trinty was more complex because he lived a parallel life. To have a home life with kids and all wasn't easy to pull off. Of course as you get to see the family dynamics, you see that he is a major control freak w/ocd to the hilt. The ice truck killer was unexpected because you had no idea that would be Dexter's biological brother.
