Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) is a former high school football star attending Greendale Community College on "Community." In high school Troy was a star quarterback and prom king, but purposely injured himself when he couldn't take the pressure of impressing a college talent scout. He now plays football for Greendale, though he does it for fun because the team is so bad that he doesn't need to worry about looking good.
Troy is best friends with Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) and they spend most of their time together, but when he tries to become Abed's roommate, Abed turns him down. Troy doesn't understand why Abed is being so mean until he accidentally makes himself sick by eating an enormous cookie, realizing that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The two are always goofing around and host an imaginary talk show in Greendale's study room called "Troy and Abed in the Morning," though the fact that it is fake regularly confuses and annoys their guests.
Troy went to high school with fellow Greendale student Annie Edison (Alison Brie), who dropped out early due to an addiction to Adderall, although he doesn't recognize her until she brings it up in their study group. Early in the series Annie has a crush on Troy but he doesn't realize it until it is too late, instead thinking of her as the nerdy, unattractive girl she used to be in high school.
Troy is not very smart and constantly misunderstands things. This annoys some of his friends, who assume that he couldn't possibly be as dumb as he seems. On Family Day he tries to hide from his grandmother because she is very strict and whips people who disrespect her, including people who aren't related to her. At one point he has a pet monkey named "Annie's Boobs" which escapes and now lives in Greendale's ventilation system.
