Award-winning American actor Boyd Gained was born on May 11, 1953 in Atlanta, Georgia. Trained at the Juilliard School in New York, he initially started acting for stage, appearing in productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Roundabout Theatre and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He started acting for the screen in 1980, playing graduating senior Michael in the musical film Fame. He got wider familiarity, however, in 1981, when he joined the cast of the series One Day at a Time, playing Mark Royer, the boyfriend of Barbara (Valerie Bertinelli).
Gaines appeared in numerous television programs throughout his career. His guest roles include those for Remington Steele, Hotel, L.A. Law, Frasier, 100 Centre Street and Law & Order. In 2006, he joined the cast of the short-lived drama Angela’s Eyes, where he played Colin Anderson, the incarcerated father of the title character (Abigail Spencer) and former notorious spy. He has also starred in numerous films, including The Sure Thing, Call Me, The Confession, Second Best and Lovely by Surprise.
However, Gaines is most acclaimed for his work on stage. He has, to his name, four Tony Awards: in 1989, for The Heidi Chronicles; in 1994, for She Loves Me; in 2000, for Contact; and in 2008, for Gypsy. He also has four Drama Desk Awards to his name. Gaines is also known as a voice talent, having recorded several audiobooks.
