Freddie Prinze, Jr. Joins Forces with the WWE
Thursday, July 31, 2008

Freddie Prinze, Jr.The line between wrestling and show business isn't thin, it's completely non-existent.  Wrestlers like The Rock and John Cena have crossed over into movies, while celebrities like David Arquette and Kevin Federline have promoted themselves shamelessly on wrestling programs.  The only real difference between the WWE and Hollywood is that only one requires an abundance of body-slamming and spandex.

Today has brought us yet another example of the invisible barrier between wrestling and Hollywood.  Freddie Prinze, Jr., who's perhaps better known as Mr. Sarah Michelle Gellar or the lauded thespian from She's All That, will be taking on a role behind the scenes on shows such as WWE Raw and Friday Night Smackdown.

The WWE is bringing Prinze in to help shape story lines for both its weekly wrestling programs and its special pay-per-view events.  It's unlikely that he'll appear in front of the camera, which should make wrestling fans cheer and Wing Commander fans cry out in agony.  Instead, Prinze will contribute to the overwrought drama and bizarre hijinks that make up the WWE scripts.

"Bringing on board an experienced Hollywood writer, actor and producer like Freddie Prinze, Jr. will only increase the level of entertainment to millions of viewers and passionate WWE fans every Monday on USA," said Chris McCumber, a representative from the USA network.  WWE Chairman Vince McMahon added, "Freddie Prinze, Jr.'s passion, energy and creativity make him an excellent fit for WWE."

While it's great that Freddie Prinze, Jr. has found an outlet for his writing talents, I want to know what this means for his future acting projects.  What about the long hoped for second season of ABC's Freddie, that I personally have been campaigning for since 2006?  What about Scooby-Doo 3: Monsters A-Go-Go?  What about Summer Catch 2: Requiem?  Or I Seriously Know What You Did Last Summer, So Don't Even Front?  All of these brilliant ideas will have to be put on hold.

There's no word on when Prinze will begin contributing to the WWE programs, so I suggest keeping a look out for a sly reference to Head Over Heels.
