'Women's Murder Club,' a New Police Procedural, Brought to You by...Jessica Simpson's Dad?
Women's Murder Club is a brand-new ABC police procedural starring
Angie Harmon about four women in San Francisco, who pool their resources to solve crimes. One is a detective, one an assistant District Attorney, one is a medical examiner, and one is a reporter. The series is loosely based on a series of books by the prolific author James Patterson. There's not a whole lot special about
Women's Murder Club. It's not particularly highly touted, it hasn't received much buzz, and, quality-wise, it could go either way. The premise is sound, and it simply depends on the execution, which is the case for most shows. There is, however, one piece of bizarre info surrounding the show: one of its executive producers is Joe Simpson, the father of pop “singers” Jessica and Ashlee Simpson.

why do you have quotes around "singers" Ashlee and Jessica?
Joe Simpson has always been a weird character. A former Baptist minister, he has been the manager of both his daughter's music careers and the force behind both of their wretched MTV reality shows. He has been known to comment upon his daughter Jessica's breasts and is generally considered a bit of a creep. So, thanks to TVGuide's Michael Ausiello's coverage of today's ABC's press tour, it was a bit of a shock when he was seen on the
Women's Murder Club panel.
Ausiello reports that reporters asked numerous times what Simpson did for
Women's Murder Club to earn the Executive Producer title, and his answers, it appears, were suspiciously vague. He said that James Patterson “took him in as a partner” at one point, then later added that he got the whole process started, whatever that means. Also, he wouldn't rule out the possibility of Jessica or Ashlee making a cameo. Yikes.
What any of this means, I have no clue. Why Joe Simpson would be needed in a capacity in which he has no experience especially on a prime time network show, is impossible to know. Whatever it is, the likelihood of it being kind of creepy is high, the likelihood of it being unnecessary, higher. Perhaps some more info will arrive soon. We'll keep you posted.
