'White Collar' Preview: 4 Things to Know About the Season 4 Premiere
Monday, July 9, 2012
White Collar, USA's endlessly entertaining series, is back for
another season of excitement and cons. The drama starring Matt Bomer and
Tim DeKay begins Tuesday, July 10 at 9pm on USA and picks up with the
big cliffhanger last season ended with.
Neal and Mozzie finally decided to run after Peter warned them about Agent Kramer's attempt to send Neal back to prison. As season 4 begins, six weeks have passed and Neal and Mozzie are set up in a tropical island paradise while Peter tries to track them down before Agent Collins, a new foe who is working for Kramer.
The first few episodes of White Collar season 4 are spent trying to unravel that cliffhanger, and I'm happy to report that everything isn't magically fixed in one episode, or even two or three. The show put its characters into a corner, and it's going to take more than a single hour to get things back to normal.
So don't expect a quick return to Neal and Peter solving white collar cases in New York City together right away. But what you can expect are some interesting new characters and plenty of scenes of Neal relaxing in a tropical paradise with an enjoyable lack of clothing. Here are four things you should know about White Collar season 4 before it begins.
Neal and Mozzie Are the Same
Sure, these two fled the country, abandoned their old identities and have new aliases (James and Barry), but a leopard can't change its spots. Neal is still effortlessly charming, noble-hearted and a sucker for hard-to-get women and stylish hats. And Mozzie is still a rabble-rousing philosopher who uses phrases like "bel esprit." You can take these two out of New York City, but you can't take the NYC out of them.
Lots of Shirtless Neal
The first time we see Neal in season 4, he's taking a dip in his pool, followed by a nice hot shower. And that's not even his steamiest scene of the episode. Between this and Matt Bomer's appearance in Magic Mike, he's making an awfully good case to be a serious contender for People Magazine's 2012 Sexiest Man Alive.
While Alias star Mia Maestro might draw most of the attention as a sexy business owner who catches Neal's eye, it's another new character who proves to be something special. Hector is a little boy on the tropical island Neal and Mozzie are living on who sells papayas. But he's also a skilled tiny con man in training as Neal has taken a shine to him. It's enough to make you wish Neal would sign up as a Big Brother and tutor some troubled young kid.
Agent Collins Is a Bad Guy
Mekhi Phifer shows up as Agent Kyle Collins from the Office of International Affairs. His job is to track down Neal, and he's like the T-1000 in his relentless pursuit. Phifer may have played a good guy on Torchwood, Lie to Me and ER, but here it's very clear that he is not someone who will fall for Neal's charms, nor does he play by the rules. He's compared, unfavorably, to Dog the Bounty Hunter, and his actions in the second episode of the season are sure to make him one of the most hated villains this show has ever had.
