Fran Kranz graduated from Yale University in May 2005 and soon began a career in acting. His interest in the arts was initially sparked when he took a communications course in ninth grade. He further honed his talents while he was in high school, when he actively participated in the production of Jesus Christ Superstar, where he played Judas.
While in school, Kranz decided to take acting seriously and considered it to be his summer job. He said in an interview with Yale Herald, "I decided that I was only going to act professionally during the summers and during vacations. I was set on getting my high school diploma and then going to college."
However, more offers came to Kranz and he finally launched a full time acting career upon graduating college. Since then, he has appeared in Frasier, Donnie Darko, Training Day, Orange County, Matchstick Men, The Village, Admissions, The Night of the White Pants, Homeland, Rise and Careless. In 2007, he was cast for the role of Josh, a young writer whose life turns upside down after he moves to an uptown apartment in Hollywood in the series, Welcome to the Captain.
Josh Flug of CBS' Welcome to the Captain is played by Fran Kranz. Josh is a writer whose filmmaking career suddenly went dry. Deciding that he's better off in New York, he was convinced by his best friend, Marty Tanner to stay and reside at a fabled Hollywood apartment building, El Capitan or The Captain owned by Marty himself. Upon arriving at The Captain, Josh encounters a group of eccentric residents who charm their way into his life, with the seductive Charlene, the old man and former writer Uncle Saul, the gossipy doorman Jesus, the aspiring actress Astrid, and the aspiring acupuncturist, Hope.
