On February 4, CBS is premiering
Welcome to the Captain, a new comedy series about a young filmmaker who moves into his best friend's legendary apartment building after his career hits a wall. There, he meets an eccentric array of tenants who turns his life upside down.
Originally, the network scheduled Welcome to the Captain's premiere for Monday, January 28. However, it has been forced to push back the premiere one week, in order to give way to the State of the Union Address.
The show boasts of a stellar cast that includes
Fran Kranz (
Frasier) as Josh Flug,
Chris Klein (
American Pie 1 and 2, Just Friends, American Dad) as accountant-to-the-stars and Josh's best friend Marty Tanner,
Jeffrey Tambor (
Arrested Development) as former
Three's Company writer Uncle Saul,
Al Madrigal (
Wizards of Waverly Place) as gossipy doorman Jesus,
Valerie Azlynn (
Joe Schmo 2, Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother) as flighty aspiring actress Astrid and
Raquel Welch (
American Family, Spin City) as seductive femme fatale Charlene.
Former
Reba actress
Joanna Garcia also stars in
Welcome to the Captain. She appears as Hope, a beautiful wannabe acupuncturist who makes Josh her practice patient. In the process, she becomes Josh's love interest.
As it stands now,
Welcome to the Captain's freshman season will have six episodes. It is executive-produced by creator Josh Hamburg (
Meet the Parents), along with Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen (
Friends). It is also CBS' first series order for a single-camera comedy since 2001's
Danny.
Welcome to the Captain is one of the few scripted shows that are part of CBS television lineup for early 2008. Others include the miniseries
Comanche Moon, and returning shows like
The New Adventures of Old Christine and
Jericho.
As with most networks, the bulk of CBS' winter lineup is made up of game and reality series. This is due to the ongoing WGA strike, which has halted production on many television shows and forced networks to delay airings of new episodes. Viewers, therefore, can expect to get a heavy dose of reality television in the coming weeks. For one, CBS is serving up new seasons of such reality and game programs as
Big Brother, Do You Trust Me, Power of 10 and
Survivor.
