The Stonys must be the most laid back awards ceremony in existence. Unlike the Oscars and the Emmys, which force celebrities to get dressed to the nines so they can show up to collect garish trophies, The Stony Awards are a much more low-key affair. The annual gala is sponsored by
High Times magazine and celebrates the "highest and stoniest" movies and TV shows of the year. Past winners include such TV series as
Entourage and
Weeds, and movies like
Knocked Up and
Grandma's Boy. It may not be the classiest event in California, but it's probably the most fun to attend.
The Eighth Annual Stony Awards were held in Malibu over the weekend and honored such celebrities as James Franco and Daneel Harris. Read on to find out who else received a special bong-shaped trophy.
James Franco picked up the Stoner of the Year award for his hilarious turn in this summer's
Pineapple Express, while Daneel Harris was crowned Stonette of the Year for reprising her role as Vanessa in
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
One Tree Hill fans will also remember that her character, Rachel, dealt with far less amusing drug problems during last season of the CW series.
Best Pot Comedy Film went to
Pineapple Express, while the indie movie
The Wackness won for Best Drama. The documentary prize went to
Super High Me, which follows comedian Doug Benson as he smokes marijuana non-stop for 30 days. On the TV side,
Attack of the Show: 420 Special won for Best TV Special, and
Weeds picked up a trophy for Best TV Show, which it also won in 2006.
The Stonys don't always attract a huge celebrity crowd, but this year both James Franco and Gary Cole showed up to collect honors for
Pineapple Express. "I'm so proud of this movie," Franco told
High Times after picking up the trophy. "It's like the first movie that really kind of examines what a relationship is like between a guy and his dealer. It's almost like a love story."
It's no surprise that
Weeds was honored as Best TV Show, but the series did have to beat out some very 420-friendly competition. The other nominees in the category were
Entourage,
Flight of the Conchords,
Buzzin', and
Californication.
Perhaps the biggest surprise about the ceremony is that it was held on September 27. Wouldn't April 20 have been a bit more fitting?
