Weeds

-Drama Weeds is a dark comedy series that chronicles the life of Nancy Botwin in the fictional upper-middle class surburb of Agrestic, California. Nancy begins selling marijuana (also known in American slang as "weed") to supplement her income and maintain her lifestyle. Weeds contrasts well the illicit drug use and distribution in the nice suburb of Agrestic with the support, help, and purchases from seemingly innocent residents. Weeds is a critically acclaimed series and airs on Showtime.

Something to Toke About: The Best Stoners on TV
Sunday, April 20, 2008

WeedsGiven the day, it seems only appropriate that we would pay respect to the most laid back, easy-going group of all: the stoners. April 20 is as close as we come to having a Nation Weed Smoking Day in this country, so what better way to celebrate here at BuddyTV than to reflect on our favorite pot-smoking television characters. Well, I imagine you could think of one or two better ways.

For this list, we've put together five of our favorite television characters with reefer madness.  Sure, there are many characters who've experimented, such as Seth Cohen from The O.C. or Ross on Friends, but for this list, we wanted honest-to-God, red-blooded, bong lovers.  And indeed, we've found characters who all have a need...a need for weed.

The Mooninites, Aqua Teen Hunger ForceThe Mooninites, Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Any ATHF episode is better with the Mooninites. These odd moon creatures are only interested in two things: stealing, and selling their stolen goods to buy weed and get high. They're rude, inconsiderate and will force you to do whatever they want for their own personal goal of getting high. And we love them for it, because they're doing it as hard as they can.

Jeffrey Tambor, Arrested DevelopmentOscar Bluth, Arrested Development

Almost always high, George Bluth's twin brother Oscar enjoys nothing more than heading down to the “big yellow joint.” A bumbling moron, he brilliantly represents years and years of marijuana usage. You may be ineffective and useless, but you'll love every minute of it.

Towelie, South ParkTowelie, South Park

He's a towel that only wants to get high. The premise is so simple, so stupid, that the only way to fully appreciate the genius of Towelie is to be completely stoned yourself. He's a symbol of the elegant simplicity of marijuana culture. Plus, he's popular enough to be reference by Veronica Mars, which makes Towelie infinitely cooler in my book.

Danny Masterson, That 70s ShowSteven Hyde, That 70s Show

A show about the 1970s surely needed to have pot-smoking teens, but how could they get away with it on a major network sitcom? Simply replace the bong with a camera and spin it around so all we can see are the smiling, giggling faces of these lovable scamps, leaving us to fill in the blanks. Among this crop, Hyde, the rebellious conspiracy theorist, is instantly relatable to any true stoner, the guy who always comes up with the craziest rants while buzzed.

Kevin Nealon, WeedsDoug Wilson, Weeds

I could make this entire list from this one show alone, but in Showtime's grand ode to herb, there is no better stoner than Doug Wilson. The former city councilman of Agrestic, Doug is a guy who simply loves to light up a fattie and relax, speaking his mind and not giving a crap what anyone thinks. Played by Kevin Nealon in what will undoubtedly be the hallmark of his career, Doug is TV's best stoner because he's the kind of fun-loving guy who just wants to be free to do his own thing.

Editor's Note: BuddyTV in no way endorses the smoking, ingestion or consumption in any other manner of marijuana or its related products and by-products.
