Olsen will be playing a devout Christian girl named Tara. Tara is the latest resident of the newly developed megachurch neighborhood, Majestic. She eventually becomes the love interest of Silas, son of single mother Nancy Botwin, played by
Mary-Louise Parker. Silas is played by 20-year-old
Hunter Parrish.
The Olsen twins began their acting career at a very young age, having made their debut on the ABC sitcom,
Full House, when they were only 9 months old. They took turns playing the role of Michelle Tanner, the youngest of the Tanner brood. The series lasted for eight years, and when it ended, Mary-Kate and Ashley started focusing on selling their image. They set up Dualstar in 1993 and from there, began marketing their brand through books, fragrances, magazines, clothes and movies. Since 2002, the Olsen twins have been on The Celebrity 100 List of Forbes Magazine.
As they were building their business, Mary-Kate and Ashley continued to star in a number of productions, including the ABC sitcom
So Little Time and the films
New York Minute, Billboard Dad, Switching Goals, Our Lips Are Sealed, Winning London, Holiday in the Sun, Getting There, When in Rome and
The Challenge.
Although Olsen’s upcoming role in
Weeds deviates from the more wholesome ones she has done in the past, series creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan is optimistic about the 20-year-old actress’ involvement with the show.
"
Weeds isn't your 8 o'clock family fare," she said. "It's an adult show with adult subject matter, and we're confident Mary-Kate is right for the role. She came in and read with Hunter and was absolutely charming and real and seemed like a great fit. Audiences have seen only one side of Mary-Kate, but here we'll see her in a whole new light."
The third season of
Weeds, which will premiere in August, contains 15 episodes. Olsen will appear in only 10.
