It's the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aka my favorite awards show of the season. It is a more glamorous affair than the Golden Globes, but less stuffy than
the Emmys. The SAG Awards strikes the right tone of fun and reputable and delivers what everyone at home wants to see: the actors we know and love getting recognized for the good work we have enjoyed. Certainly the writers and directors and all the other hardworking folks in Hollywood deserve awards, but let's get real; we like to see the pretty, talented people get awarded for being pretty and talented.
Veep is available on Amazon Prime.
Because there is no host, the show starts out with the usual "I'm an actor" monologues, which creates an amicable and open feeling of camaraderie, I think. I enjoy seeing an array of actors from Rob Lowe to Kaley Cuoco talk about being in the same business.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Mixes Up Her Speeches
In accepting her award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus was hilarious in a bit where she mixed up her speeches. If I had as many nominations and wins as her, I would be mixing them up as well!
Emma Thompson Is Hilarious
Emma Thompson continues to prove she is the best presenter at awards shows when she made a crack about wanting to get the SAG Award background music on a CD. She really makes the most of her time on stage.
Ty Burrell Shares the Secrets of Acting
In his very sweet and funny acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Modern Family's Ty Burrell taught us his five rules "for acting good."
Breaking Bad Goes Out Swinging
I love that Bryan Cranston fangirls over Emma Thompson. He is just the best on so many levels.
What I love about the SAG Awards is that they celebrate entire ensembles of shows or movies, emphasizing the teamwork that goes in to making a show great. Both Bryan Cranston and Breaking Bad's overall win were such celebrations of the show in its final season, recognizing the immense talent of the cast. Though, I am disappointed that Anna Gunn didn't win, as much as I love Maggie Smith. It is also a huge relief to know that Huell got out of the safe house.
This was a rough year in regards to losing so many beloved actors and actresses. The SAG memoriam was beautiful and heartfelt without being as depressing and overwhelming as the Emmys this past year. I definitely teared up several times.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Rita Moreno won the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award and despite her EGOT, trending on Twitter and several other accolades, she showed us all it is possible to sing when accepting an award without sounding super creepy (ahem...Diane Keaton...ahem).
Modern Family Wins Again
Considering Modern Family had a lukewarm season at best, I am surprised that they won the ensemble award for the fourth year in a row. However, so long as The Big Bang Theory doesn't win I'm happy. Plus, they seem like a fun group of folks and I enjoyed their acceptance speech. And, I guess, Sofia Vergara's boobs.
Despite Ben Affleck closing the show on a cranky note (what's up with him lately? Hammered at the Golden Globes, now this?), the show was a delightful, glamorous event!
