American Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Frank Edgar, will match up against Spencer Fisher at UFC 78 on Saturday, November 17th. The Undefeated MMA fighter took some time to talk to BuddyTV the other day about how he got started in his MMA career, how experience plays a role in the octagon, and what he'd be doing if he weren't an MMA fighter. Check out the full interview transcript and the mp3 audio below.
This is Royce from BuddyTV and I'm here with MMA fighter Frank Edgar. How's it going Frank?
Good man. What's up guys.
Not much, thanks for taking the time to talk with us.
No problem.
So Frank, maybe you can start by just talking a little bit about your background. How did you get started in mixed martial arts?
I guess I got started from a stretch off my wrestling career. I finished up wrestling in college in about 2005 and I was always a fan of the sport and it kind of just fit pretty good. And just been doing it ever since then and it's been going good.
Nice. How would you describe your fighting style?
I'd say fast-paced and intense. I'm constantly moving. Constantly looking to do damage. Win positions and stuff like that. So I'd definitely say fast paced and intense is the best way to describe the way I fight.
You're currently undefeated in your MMA career, how do you feel coming into this fight against Spencer Fisher?
I feel good. I think it's a great opportunity for me to fight someone of Spencer Fishers stature. He's definitely a veteran of the sport. He's well know and is a top contender ... I think it's a good opportunity for me.
How much do you feel experience plays a role in the octagon? You mentioned Spencer definitely is a veteran when it comes to the sport, and you're still relatively new. How do you kind of see that playing out?
Yeah. I'm sure experience is going to help him some, hopefully not too much though. I feel pretty comfortable in there and I'm just going to stick to the game plan. Stick to what I've got to do to win, and I think I'll pan out pretty well.
What have you been doing to prepare for this fight?
Just training every day man, twice a day. Nothing in particular that's different from any other fight. Obviously I try to step up my training every time and it's no different for Spencer, obviously. I mean, I may be training a little harder mentally and physically, it can help. I've just been plugging away, doing what I've got to do to get ready for Spencer.
Can you talk to us a little bit about your game plan and how you see this fight shaping up?
I can't really say exactly what's going to happen because this is a fight and it can go either way, you know? I'm just ready to do whatever I have to do in order to win. Whether it's standing up and fighting or hitting the ground or fighting off my back. Whatever it takes, I'm ready for that.
Cool. More on a personal note, who are some of your favorite mixed martial artists to watch?
I'd have to say (Georges) St. Pierre is fun to watch. He's really well rounded. Shogun, I like watching him. There are so many to tell you the truth. You start watching one guy for a while and you start liking him a little more. Then you see someone else and you like him a little more. I'm definitely a fan of the sport so there are just a lot of good guys out there, you know?
Yeah. What would you be doing if you weren't fighting?
Well, I was a plumber. I worked for my fathers company for, probably up until a couple months ago. So that's probably what I'd be doing.
Cool. So what can fans really expect to see once you step foot in the octagon come November 17th?
Just excitement. And definitely a good show. I know Spencer never has a boring fight. And I like to pride myself on that, being exciting. Just put on a show for the hometown crowd, you know?
Cool. Well thanks again Frank for your time. From all of us at BuddyTV we just want to wish you the best of luck. We're looking forward to an exciting fight.
Thank you guys.
