MMA welterweight, Josh Koscheck, will fight former
UFC and TKO welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 74 this Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Josh spent some time with BuddyTV the other day to talk about how he’s been preparing for the upcoming fight and what we can expect to see once he steps foot in the Octagon.
Check out the full interview transcript and listen to the mp3 audio below.
Well this is Royce from Buddy TV, and I’m here with undeniably one of the top welterweights in the world, Josh Koscheck. How’s it going, Josh?
I’m doing pretty good. Thanks for having me on, I really appreciate the opportunity.
Definitely, it’s always a pleasure chatting with you.
Thank you.
Well, can you tell us a little bit about what you’ve been doing to prepare for what is without a doubt, the toughest fight you’ve had to date versus Georges St. Pierre?
I’m pretty much myself. I’ve been secluded in the San Jose, California American Kickboxing Academy, that’s where I do my training. Been here for three months, and I’m pretty much sick of San Jose, and I probably would rather give up winning the lottery than stay in town any longer. It’s just a hard three months of training, I’ve been busting my butt, when I was three months out, I was doing a lot of different crazy things, like car pushes. Just a lot of crazy training, as people are gonna get to see that on the Spike TV countdown show on the 23rd. It’s been a good, long, hard training camp, and I’m actually glad that I made it through healthy. I’m just prepared now, just getting mentally ready for the fight.
Definitely, so are you 100% coming into this bout?
Oh yeah, I’m healthy as hell, and I can’t complain about anything. I’m very healthy right now and I’m just excited about the opportunity to fight.
Cool. You know, St. Pierre is definitely athletic, strong, skilled…and obviously you’re equally talented. Are there any gaps in St. Pierre’s game that you plan on exploiting?
Well, I think he’s definitely one of the best fighters in the UFC, which is well-roundedness. He can strike, he can kick, he can knee, elbow, punch. And he knows wrestling, and he knows jujitsu. So I think that the guy who makes the least amount of mistakes in this fight is the guy who’s going to come out out winning. So ultimately the fight is gonna end up on the ground at some point, that’s where my strong point is, and I feel that’s his weakest point. So hopefully if it does end up on the ground, I can take advantage of it. If it stands on the feet, then I’m in for a war. I’ve prepared for that, and I’m ready to fight that type of fight.
Your MMA skills have improved significantly over the last couple of years. What should we expect to see from you in your upcoming match?
I think people that tune in are gonna get to see a different side of me, something I’m gonna bring to the octagon. Every single time I fight, I bring something different, and it’s gonna be the same for this fight. I’m gonna bring something different that fans have not gotten to see from me, so expect it to be an exciting fight.
Obviously, you’re not looking past St. Pierre, but what’s next for you after this fight?
After this fight, I’m gonna go home and relax, man. Work on my clothing company, just started a new clothing company, it’s called MAR Clothing. And it’s marclothing.com, and I’m gonna go home and relax for a couple of months. Just do my normal training, stay in shape, lift some weights, and just kind of hang out a little bit, man. Because I’ve been on the go for this whole year, I’ve been doing nothing but training. I haven’t had any down time, and I’m just gonna relax after this fight. I’m not really looking forward to what the future has for me in the sport right now. I’m just gonna focus on what I’m doing right now, and that’s one more week of rest, and a little light training and the fight on the 25th.
Well, clearly you deserve a title shot if you beat St. Pierre, and I’m sure you’ll get one. But who’s that one guy in the UFC that you would just love to tangle with?
There’s a couple of guys that I’d like to beat up. Karo Parisyan would be one, Matt Hughes is another one. He’s supposed to be pound for pound, one of the best fighters ever in the world, so I’d like to get in there and mix it up with him a little bit. There’s a lot of good fighters still for me to fight, and so I’m just looking forward to the opportunity to getting to fight some of those other guys in the future.
Who has had the biggest impact on you as an MMA fighter?
I would have to say the biggest impact on myself as an MMA fighter would probably be my training partners. I have John Fitch, Mike Swick, all the guys at American Kickboxing Academy. All the way down to the little guys, even like Josh Thompson, who’s a 155-pounder. They’ve all had a huge impact in my career and helped me get to where I’m at. Without those guys, I wouldn’t be fighting the culminating event on the UFC, that’s for sure. Because those guys are the ones that are in there every day pushing me, and those are the guys in there that are helping me get prepared to get out there and fight in the octagon. So those guys are the ones that have the biggest impact in my career so far, my training partners.
Alright, well thanks again Josh for your time, and from all of us at Buddy TV, good luck to you. We’re looking forward to an exciting fight.
Alright, thanks a lot. I appreciate Buddy TV for doing this interview.
