Charlie Sheen is the highest paid actor on television. No one could have predicted this. That doesn't mean Sheen is the best actor on television, Not by a long shot. What it means is that he is one of, if not the, most beloved personality on TV. You or I may not agree with that last sentence, but when you consider that
Two and a Half Men is the highest-rated comedy on television, and its main attraction is Mr. Sheen, what other conclusion can one come to? Charlie Sheen, love him or hate him, carries
Two and a Half Men with his charm.
Two and a Half Men is not a critical favorite, but the millions of viewers who tune in every week to watch the series don't give a hoot about snooty critics. There will always be a place on TV for conventional, traditional sitcoms.
Two and a Half Men isn't overly ambitious, doesn't take risks, it just consistently provides set-ups and punch lines, slaps on a laugh track and pleases the masses. Sheen's laconic, autobiographical take on “Charlie” in
Two and a Half Men is interesting, in that Sheen might have the easiest acting job on TV. It's not a lack of effort, it's that Sheen is almost literally playing himself, and can do so effortlessly.
Two and Half Men is returning for its sixth season this Fall, and there don't appear to be any challengers in the offing for that top-rated comedy spot. Expect another year of workmanlike comedy, full of easy jokes and comedy palatable to the general public.
