I sometimes wonder what the people at the Vatican do all day. Evidently, they surf the Internet to find the most recent craze in order to condemn it. According to
Britain's Daily Mail, the Vatican released a statement about the newest chapter of the
Twilight saga on Thursday. Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, who is the Vatican's culture council leader, wanted to clear up the church's views on the
New Moon.
He said that the series is a "mixture of excesses aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element" and that
New Moon "is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message." Perazzolo claims that the film should be "of concern."
Of all the movies in Hollywood, why this one?
New Moon definitely isn't a moral high ground by any means but the implications of marriage and abstinence are fairly clear. Perazzolo wouldn't say if he'd actually even seen the film but all he has to do is read a review or two to figure out the chaste message of the series.
Sure,
New Moon has a bunch of vampires and werewolves and Charlie drinks a Rainer beer or two but is it cause for concern? If anything, Stephenie Meyer is bettering the morals of our youth, not corrupting them. Maybe the Vatican just wanted to get in on all the hype? But seriously? I'm not buying it.
What do you guys think? Does the Vatican have a point? Am I overestimating the intelligence of our nation's youth?
