The number of votes cast for the People's Choice Awards were a staggering 475 million. And the voters have spoken: They love everything
Hunger Games and Katy Perry. The usuals won like
The Big Bang Theory and Taylor Swift, and the surprise of the night went to breakout artist.
Here are some of the highlights from the People's Choice Awards, which officially kick off the award season.
The Big Upset
I would imagine there's a certain demographic that votes for the People's Choice Awards. So the winners aren't necessary the most talented or truly even fan favorites. It's just which fans of which nominee voted the most times.
Even so, I didn't imagine The Wanted would win the people's choice for breakout artist over Carly Rae Jepsen and ... especially ... One Direction! I can't tell any of these five-guy groups apart but I knew that Taylor Swift just broke up with the guy from One Direction so I automatically assumed they were the far superior boy band. Apparently not! They're cute though because they say they've never won anything before, and one of the guys said he had just told his mom his wish for the new year was to win a "massive award," and apparently the People's Choice is it.
They thank Ellen DeGeneres for "everything," because she had them on their show. They also sing a capella (and are pretty good) because they promised her they would if they won. Unfortunately the camera people drop the ball because her reaction isn't shown even once. Maybe she was in the bathroom.
Sandra Bullock, the Humanitarian
The very first favorite humanitarian award was given to Sandra Bullock for her tireless work following Hurricane Katrina (although I'm thinking everyone who was nominated in this category should be applauded).
It seemed last awards season -- or maybe the one before that? -- she was winning awards left and right for The Blind Side, which was great because she gives the best speeches. She's not only funny but modest and sincere, and yes, I even got a little emotional.
Robert Downey Jr. Dedicates His Award
As he accepted his award for favorite dramatic movie actor, he announced that he's dedicating his award to a member of his fan club who passed away recently -- 83-year-old Joyce.
Classy move, RDJ.
Adam Sandler's Favorite Things
In accepting his award for favorite movie comedic actor, Adam Sandler shared his own favorite things to keep in line with the show. Some of the more amusing faves he shared: Kardashian ... Ringo, word ... elbow, Berry ... Halle, Apple ... Fiona, James Bond movie ... Forrest Gump and smell ... Al Pacino
To top it off, he invited everyone to Jennifer Aniston's place for a pizza party after the show.
Another 'Kanye' Moment?
Taylor Swift won for favorite country artist and presenter Olivia Munn had slyly set up the "stealing the stage" moment that so famously happened a couple of years ago. You might think it's a worn out bit, but I thought the way it was set up made it sort of work.
Flash Mob for Two
Although not funny, I commend the efforts of Anthony Anderson and Monica Potter as award show presenters who believe they're part of a "Call Me Maybe" flash mob. At least Kaley Cuoco reminded them that a "Call Me Maybe" flash mob isn't something we haven't seen like a hundred times before.
But the best part of the bit was the camera finding Robert Downey, Jr. in the audience and capturing his totally unamused face.
