No one has won yet, right? We are close though -- only three cheftestants remain standing in the
Top Chef kitchens. One of them gets eliminated tonight, so which will it be? Either Mike, Antonia or Richard has to go.
And we begin with stormy seas and a tense kitchen. In the kitchen, we have Wolfgang Puck to bring the tension to the
Quickfire Challenge. For this challenge, the cheftestants get to challenge each other to a Quickfire from past seasons. Mike assigns Antonia the canned goods. Antonia in turn assigns hot dogs to Richard. And Richard gives Mike the one-pot challenge.
And they're off! The crazy cooking gets off to a good start. But then Padma walks back in to offer twists to the cheftestants. They get to assign each other again. Richard assigns no utensils to Mike. Antonia chooses the one-hand challenge to Richard. Which leaves Antonia to cook tag-team style with a suddenly-returned Carla.
- Antonia has a Curry Coconut Soup with Shrimp, Andouille Sausage, Peanuts and Fish Sauce.
- Richard has Hot Dog on Handmade Roti Bread with Curry Ketchup, Mayo and Mint Leaves.
- Mike has Pork Shoulder with Black Beans, Chili Paste, Ginger and Cabbage Salad.
All three dishes get positive compliments during the tastings, but that never means much in the final evaluation. Richard's dish is seen as a little too ketchupy. Antonia's soup was maybe too concentrated. Mike's balance was OK, but the pork needed more cooking. And the winning dish was
Mike! He wins $5000 for the effort.
The cheftestants are next summoned to the Ocean Club Cloisters, where it's all big and flowery. There, Wolfgang Puck is joined by Michelle Bernstein and Masaharu Morimoto in what is obviously a successful effort to intimidate the cheftestants for their
Elimination Challenge.
The cheftestants need to prepare the "last supper" for each of the fancy chefs. Mike chooses to cook for Michelle Bernstein. He then assigns Antonia to Morimoto and Richard to Wolfgang Puck. And now for the twist! Or maybe not
now. There's a twist in Padma's envelope, but they won't see it later. For now, the cheftestants and celebrity chefs confer about the various last meals.
Back at their fancy hotel, the cheftestants discuss their plans and try to psych each other out. None of them seem particularly impressed with each other, despite the psyching. Richard's stress brings up nausea. Mike's brings up extra taunting. And Antonia just giggles. Oh boy...
The cooking is going well, until of course Tom shows up to make everyone a little bit nervous. The nerves aren't helped by Antonia's almost-spoiled fish, Richard's broken pressure cooker lid, and the specter of failed wins.
- Antonia has Tuna Sashimi with Pickled Daikon, Mushrooms and Eggplant, Miso Soup and Rice.
- Mike has Fried Chicken with Pea Puree, Egg Yolk Empanada with Mustard Gravy.
- Richard has Beef Goulash, Spaetzle with Sour Cream and Apple Strudel with Tarragon Cream.
With no preamble, the judging begins. Michelle criticizes Mike's chicken for not being juicy enough. Wolfgang loved Richard's goulash but thought the spaetzle was too tough. Morimoto says Antonia's soup was salty and the food was "different."
Richard immediately gets to go to the finale for his dish, leaving Antonia and Mike to battle it out for the last place in the finale.
And hey! It's time for the twist! The first twist is that the envelope has no actual information. The second twist is that Mike and Antonia have to go back to the kitchen to make one bite for each of the judges. They have 45 minutes to do so.
- Antonia has Seared Grouper in Coconut Lobster Broth with a Yam, Apple and Dill Pollen Relish.
- Mike has Tempura Lobster over Beef Tartare with Caramelized Olives and Chimichurri Sauce.
The judges go and divide themselves over which dish they like better. Which of course means a commercial before the actual decision gets made. Of course.
But even commercials have to end sometime. And that means we finally get a result.
Antonia will be packing her knives, while
Mike goes on to the finals!
So that means that
Richard and Mike are in the finals! One more week...
