Veronica Webb, Tim Gunn's partner in fashion on
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, has worn a lot of outfits in her years as a model for Isaac Mizrahi, Victoria's Secret, Chanel and Calvin Klein.
There is one outfit, however, that she's sure everyone can do without: the sweatsuit.
She says, "If you're wearing a sweatsuit and you're not going to or from the gym, you've given up…Fashion creates images. It breaks down boundaries. It can be a starting point for anything you want to happen. There's something to be said for dressing the part."
She and Tim explain how to dress the part on
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, and finding a “sweatsuit alternative” is one of the recommendations they make. The point is to have an easy and comfortable – but chic and pulled-together – outfit always at the ready. That way, on those days where you find yourself too tired, stress, or busy to put a lot of thought or effort into what you are wearing, you have this go-to “sweatsuit alternative” to, well, go to.
"When you don't want to think about what to wear…[y]ou want to have that outfit ready. If you don't, you'll end up with a pile of clothes on the floor, you still won't feel good and you're late," says Webb.
For her, the outfit is a comfortable but stylish empire-waist dresses. She might be a model, but she's also a mother of two girls under the age of five. So she knows that for many women – especially after having children – it can be difficult to always maintain the same level of style as she once did. By having an easy dress handy, she can keep herself feeling put-together without wasting a lot of time.
