Although
The Young and the Restless nabbed the most nominations, the long-running series didn’t turn out as the night’s big winner at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmys held last Friday in Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. Instead the award for Best Drama went to
General Hospital, which turned 45 this year. Additionally, the award for Best Lead Actor went to
General Hospital actor
Anthony Geary, who is noted for his role as Luke Spencer.
The much-awaited event, which was hosted by
All My Children’s
Cameron Mathison and
The View’s Sherri Shepherd, received a makeover this year with a Golden Globes style seating arrangement and digital cameras installed on the tables, putting viewers literally in the audience.

I am glad that Katherine and Neil won. I was sick of the same people winning over and over again.
Nevertheless, the evening didn’t come to a close without giving a few honors to
The Young and the Restless. In fact,
Kristoff St. John and
Jeanne Cooper were among the many nominated actors who won an award. St. John, who plays Neil Winters, won the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, while Cooper, who portrays Katherine Chancellor, took home the award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Though she was not on the series when the show debuted in March 1973, Cooper made her onscreen debut in November of that year, and remains the longest-tenured actor on T
he Young and the Restless. She earned nine Daytime Emmy nominations, eight for Outstanding Lead Actress and one for Outstanding Supporting Actress, and two Primetime Emmy nominations. She also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmys in 2004. For her contributions to television, Cooper received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Out of her eight nominations for lead actress, her recent Daytime Emmy acquisition was her first win in the category.
St. John, on the other hand, previously won the the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for his role on
The Young and the Restless. Over the years, he has also won numerous NAACP Image Awards.
