The X Factor is undergoing some new format changes to find the Top 16 acts of season 3, and it all begins in October. FOX released the schedule for the next month leading up to the first live performance show on a special night, Tuesday, October 29.

The auditions will come to an end on Thursday, September 26 when the four judges will narrow the finalists down to the Top 40, with 10 in each group. Then the show will reveal which one each judge will mentor, Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups.

That will lead into the new Four-Chair Challenge rounds, which will run for two weeks starting on Wednesday, October 2. Instead of going to the judges' homes, the Top 40 will all perform in front of a live studio audience. Each judge will have four chairs on stage representing their four open spots in the Top 16, and after each performance, the judge will decide if the act deserves a spot or should go home. This can create some tension as the audience will be cheering and yelling for the judges to save their favorites.

The Four-Chair Challenge episodes will end on Thursday, October 10, at which point the Top 16 acts will be decided. Due to the baseball playoffs and World Series on FOX, The X Factor will then take two weeks off.

It will return on a special night, Tuesday, October 29, for the first live show as the Top 16 acts will perform. It's unclear when the first results show will air or how things will be scheduled. The World Series is scheduled to have Game 6 on Wednesday, October 30 and Game 7 on Thursday, October 31, if needed. If it doesn't go to seven games, I suspect we'll see the first results show on one of those nights.

So to sum it up, here's the October schedule for The X Factor season 3. All episodes begin at 8pm, with Wednesday (and Tuesday) episodes running two-hours while Thursday episodes are only one hour.
