Let the annual changing of the guard at The X Factor begin! According to People, sources close to Demi Lovato say that the young pop star is leaving her post as a judge and mentor on The X Factor after this season.

The source says that "She plans to spend next year completely focused on her music." This makes Demi the fifth judge to leave the show in just three years.

This news also assumes that The X Factor will be renewed for a fourth season, though FOX hasn't made it official yet. Season 3 has seen a steep decline in the ratings, though recent weeks have picked up and saw the show become relevant with several big hits on the iTunes charts, mostly from Alex and Sierra.

Simon Cowell recently said that The X Factor will definitely be back for season 4, though he was vague on what his role would be and even implied that there will be some dramatic changes to the format. It's possible the show will cut back to a single episode each week, like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.

Demi Lovato is one of many people to leave The X Factor during its short time in the U.S. In season 1, judge Cheryl Cole was fired during the auditions and judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul also left after the first year. So did host Steve Jones.

Britney Spears joined the show in season 2 and only served as judge for a single season. Original judge L.A. Reid also left after season 2, as did Mario Lopez's co-host, Khloe Kardashian.

Now Demi is leaving, and it's likely that she won't be the only one. Paulina Rubio, with her broken English and notoriously misidentifying one of her own acts, seems like a longshot to return as a judge.

The X Factor season 3 finale begins Wednesday at 8pm as the final 3 perform, with the winner being announced Thursday night.
