In the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead
, Rick decides not to kill Negan. Maggie believes he should have, and Negan has to die. She, Jesus and Daryl want to bide their time until they will "show" Rick why he was wrong. I think this will spell trouble for the Maggie in the future.
The Walking Dead Season 8 Finale Recap: Who Wins the War?>>>
Evidence of Civilization
Rick and Michonne tell an injured Negan in "Wrath" that he will be evidence of civilization. They will keep him locked away in a jail cell to rot in the hope that the future will change for the better. Rick believes there has to be something after -- be it after the war or after the virus took over and created the walkers. He believes that starts with creating order and peace. And he's hoping others will fall in line or they too can be behind bars like Negan.
By not killing Negan and stopping the violence, Rick is trying to do right by his son. He's finally realized that there is a future, even if Carl won't be around to see it. Rick wants that civilization and, hopefully, normalcy for Judith and all other children in the world. He wants that for all of the communities.
Maggie and Daryl, on the other hand, feel that Rick made a poor decision in not killing Negan. Out in the field in "Wrath," Michonne has to hold Maggie back and she screams and cries that Rick has to make it right, and that the war is not over unless Negan is dead.
Maggie is holding onto too much anger and hate toward Negan, as is Daryl. They both need to take a page from not only Rick and Michonne, but also Tara, who also lost a loved one. While Tara might not have forgiven Dwight for killing Denise, she's let go. I'm surprised that Daryl still wants Negan dead. When he let Dwight go in the woods with a car, I thought for sure that Daryl was letting his anger go. But I guess, he still holds that anger and resentment toward Negan.
This attitude could get them in trouble in the future. I know Maggie says she wants to bide her time and let her community grow stronger. But I'm not sure what her next move is after that to "show" Rick and Michonne just how wrong they are. Does this mean that Maggie now wants Rick's head too? Or does she just mean that she wants to kill Negan anyway behind Rick's back? And if so, how would Rick react? Would he imprison Maggie and whoever else is involved too?
Instead of harboring all of these negative feelings toward Negan, both Daryl and Maggie need to learn to let go. Maggie has it in her to be good, and be a good leader. By keeping most of the Savior prisoners alive and making a trade deal with Georgie, Maggie shows great leadership in season 8. But she also shows weakness and rash thinking. For example, when she kills a Savior and sends him in a box to Negan, she thought she was demonstrating her strength, but in reality, she was just sinking down to Negan's "eye-for-an-eye" level.
Maggie needs to rise above Rick's decision. She needs to show how strong of a leader she is, and she needs to keep making good decisions, even if her gut tells her otherwise. Not killing Negan is the best decision for a new world. And no matter how much Maggie hates Negan, I have a feeling deep down, she knows it's best to spare Negan, but her judgment is clouded by her love for Glenn.
Rick will certainly punish Maggie if she goes through with her plan to kill Negan. And I think anyone involved in that plan will face consequences. It could spell trouble for the Hilltop too, as Rick could associate the Hilltop with Maggie and not trust the community.
Quiz: Would You Survive on Fear the Walking Dead?>>>
It's been hinted and teased that season 9 might see a time jump, similar to the Walking Dead
comics. Maggie's rage isn't so evident in the novels right after the war, so I'm not sure how this will play out and what it could mean for the new world order.
What I do know is that it seems our Walking Dead
characters are building a better future, but will most likely face new threats -- even if not in the immediate future. While season 8 dragged out the war on Negan, I'm pleasantly surprised with the end, and curious to see what happens next.
Do you think Maggie is making a poor decision to eventually kill Negan? Was Rick right to keep Negan alive and use him as an example of civilization? Would you have killed Negan? What sort of threats do you see the communities facing next? Do you think a new world is possible, like Rick is trying to do? Let us know in the comments below.
