The survivors are in war mode as The Walking Dead resumes its eighth season. But before the battle against the Saviors continues, a beloved character bids farewell in one of the most emotional episodes in the show's history.

Picking up right after "How It's Gotta Be," in which Carl (Chandler Riggs) was bitten by a walker, "Nightmare" centers on Carl's final moments as he attempts to persuade his father Rick (Andrew Lincoln) to find his old sense of morality.

"You put away your gun, how you stopped fighting, it was right," a dying Carl tells his dad in the trailer. "It still is. You can still be like that again."

"I can't be who I was," an emotional Rick replies. "It's different now."

"Before mom died she told me I was gonna beat this world," he tells Rick, recalling Lori's (Sarah Wayne Callies) final moments. "You will."

The clip also features the other survivors as they get ready for the war against the Saviors.

"All of us, together," says Daryl (Norman Reedus.) "We'll be their worst damn nightmare."

Digging deeper into the episode, "Nightmare" serves as a defining moment that redirects Rick, as well as the rest of the group. According to executive producer Greg Nicotero, the biggest  problem with the group is that they let their emotions interfere with the plan, resulting in their judgment being clouded. However, they also have potential to succeed.

"Their biggest strength is their tenacity and their determination to win," Nicotero said in the behind the scenes clip. "The want to survive. They want to set themselves up to build a community where life can go on. That's the plan."

"I think the biggest strength we have is solidarity -- the three communities working as one,"  Lincoln added.

Meanwhile, AMC has also reminded fans on Twitter to mark their calendars for the mid-season premiere.
