The return of The Walking Dead season 7 is a little more than a month away, with AMC’s original zombie drama set to return Sunday, February 12 at 9/8c. There is more than enough reason to be excited by The Walking Dead‘s return, however, as things look like they will finally be heating up between Rick’s group and Negan’s Saviors. AMC has released three new photos and the episode description for the midseason premiere, and war is definitely coming to The Walking Dead.

Rick Grimes Will Be a New Man When The Walking Dead Returns>>> The new synopsis promises that second half of The Walking Dead season 7 will see “new survivors” and “incredible places.” There will also be “treachery from people we trust” and the group being “tested in ways we’ve never seen before.” This is all part of The Walking Dead season 7’s new storyline as Rick prepares for all-out war on Negan and the Saviors.

The official press release reads: “Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose — to defeat Negan — it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.”

The following photos, which are posted below, have also been released.

War Meeting at Hilltop?

Everything here looks pretty favorable. The promise that the group will be tested like never before falls kind of flat because that type of is verbiage used in every season of The Walking Dead lately. The word “tested” has lost all meaning for The Walking Dead, as well as the word “broken.” Rick and the group run into a lot of bad situations, Negan really isn’t much more dire than the Governor or the initial zombie outbreak.

The promise of a trusted character performing some kind of betrayal sounds intriguing but my money is on it being a lot less surprising than it sounds. The word treachery is so vague it could be something as simple as a survivor doing something stupid that gets people hurt or killed. It’s doubtful that Spencer’s death and Eugene’s kidnapping has dissuaded that much of Rosita’s impulsive “gotta kill Negan” nature. Then again, in one of the photos it looks like Enid has walked in on the group’s gathering. Maggie and Sasha’s expressions imply that Enid isn’t supposed to be there.

The most promising thing from AMC’s midseason tease is that Rick’s attempt to raise an army is going to take more than speeches. Every Walking Dead fan should be able to agree that season 7 has had way too many speeches already. The first half of season 7 involved too many characters talking too much about things they were going to do rather than actually doing them. It’s not that exciting to see that Gregory will continue to be obstinate but it should be interesting to see Rick try to convince him to fight Negan.

But what do you think? Are you excited for The Walking Dead’s return? Do you think the second half of season 7 will be stronger? Who do you think will betray the team? How many new survivors can Rick meet? Will he be able to convince Gregory or Ezekiel to go to war?
