"She's brilliant, she's funny, she's an enormous talent, she's an Oscar-winning actress, a Broadway superstar and we have her!" Walters said with excitement as she introduced Goldberg to the equally ecstatic audience.
"My goodness, can I handle it?" Goldberg said in response as she settled into the moderator's seat.
The 51-year-old actress has sealed a multi-year deal with ABC. According to Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg was a frontrunner for the gig the moment O'Donnell made it known publicly that she was leaving
The View. After learning that Goldberg was interested, she and the show entered into brief negotiations.
“She brings us great talent, she brings us humor, she brings us knowledge of current events,” Barbara Walters said of Goldberg. “She also brings us diversity. I don't think we said, ‘A-ha! She's African-American,' but it does give us diversity on the panel.”
Goldberg, who has appeared on
The View several times in the past, said that she is looking forward to participating in the “Hot Topics” roundtable discussions.
“I like spending time with these women, and there is a great conversation to be had every day with the ‘Hot Topics,'” she said. “Since they've expanded the segment, the topics have gotten much richer. I'm looking forward to being a part of that.”
With Goldberg on board, Walters said that fans can expect some developments on the show.
“It's a new chemistry and a new dynamic,” she explained.
Despite landing the early-morning gig, Goldberg said that she will continue hosting
Wake Up with Whoopi, a daily radio show on the Clear Channel.
“I'll work on that from 5 until around 8:15[am], then roll on over to
The View," she said. “We start broadcasting live at 11, and when it's all done, I'll have worked a 12-hour day.”
Goldberg will begin her hosting duties on
The View on September 4.
